Um...is Trent Hidlay possibly our rep at 86kg?

Recommended Posts

On the 5% chance that the sketchy reporting of Brooks' adderall situation is reliable AND the situation can't get resolved--is Trent Hidlay our guy at the Olympics at 86kg?!?

DT just took one of the biggest D1 jobs in the middle of transfer season. There's no way he's coming back to compete.

Valencia injury defaulted the Challenge tourney True 2nd match with Hidlay, and so Hidlay took the 3rd spot in the US National Team pecking order.

Are we locked into Hidlay as next-in-line if Brooks' situation results in a suspension??

If so, he's probably a 50% shot at wrestling for a medal.  That would be my guess.

Yeah, 86kg internationally is very deep with "good"--without much "great" other than the top 2 (DT and Yazdani). I'd pick Naifanov and the Russian representing Greece, Kurugliev, over Hidlay, with another 2 or 3 maybe coin flips. Overall, I think he'd be less than 50% to medal because of various landmines, but he'd be capable of beating anyone except probably Yazdani.

I guess my real question is: Knowing Valencia probably gives us a better chance to medal, would USAW consider a wrestle-off between Hidlay and Valencia for the spot if it came to it, or is Valencia out of luck because of defaulting?

Yes, that's why I said 50% chance of wrestling FOR a medal.

Your points are all good.

Hidlay has a couple of age group medals.  Brooks is clearly better, but also a nightmare matchup for Hidlay.  All of Hidlay's strengths are completely negated by Brooks (strength, gastank, underhooks).  Hidlay has a fairly good shot of top 5, and has wins over medalists.

Gotcha...sorry I mis-read that.

I think trent can beat naifanov hes beaten amine and kentchadze albeit an undersized kentchadze but I think talent wise he'd be up there with anyone at 86kg. If kadiev ends up being the rep for Russia I think that makes the medal outlook a bit bleaker because I do not know that Trent or even Aaron beats him for sure that kid looks incredible. I really think ghasempour may be the tougher opponent for iran this year I think they send Yaz but I do not think he will be 100%.

I do think DT will wrestle if AB cannot though.

If Brooks somehow can't wrestle, I would expect that DT will be our rep.  John Smith won a gold medal while being a coach, the Olympics are in early August which won't affect the upcoming season too much.

John Smith's olympic run and Cael's comeback were pre-transfer portal, pre-NIL. Are we sure a freshly signed DT really forfeits any of the massive OSU attention demand to his personal endeavors? I'm not sure about that. Very, very interesting scenario, though.

John Smith didn't win a gold while relocating his family, selling his farm, his wife's juice bar, and his cows.  Not to mention a decidedly weird training environment at PSU.  Already allegedly on the outs with Nickal, Brooks won't be happy, how will Cael feel about things?

I think most people would do just about anything for a shot at a gold medal. When you look at the landscape it would be about 2.5 months of training and he's mentioned before that his wife really holds things down for him. I think that he would try and make it work. I do not think he would be training at NLWC though I would imagine Dake maybe splits time with him as well as Varner and he brings some guys in if this were to happen. Perhaps I'm looking at it with rose tinted glasses though because I believe David could still win gold and for Trent it would be an uphill battle for bronze.

Dustin plott, Christian Carroll and chris perry would not be bad partners as well.

Yes, I would fully expect DT to be our rep in the event Brooks cannot go. Taking the Oklahoma State job should not eliminate him being able to compete in surely what would be his last tournament as a competitor 3 months from now. I can guarantee that Oklahoma State would fully support him doing that too and the exposure it would bring to the program (especially if he won gold) would outweigh the drawbacks of the decision.

Chris Perry?  Does he still get on the mat?

Yes he'll be busy, but this is the Olympics.  I personally don't think it's really a question if he'd go or not.

LOL would be crazy, but in the extremely unlikely case that Brooks has botched the TUE thing and is not allowed, there's 99% chance David Taylor will be competing.

And yea Hidlay did beat Kenchadze, but barely and Kentchadze is competing at 74 this weekend.

Bet Taylor would take the spot and OSU would cheer him on in every way.

A current Olympic Gold would really help recruiting.

yeah if taylor gets the spot he he gonna stay in State College and train for sure. OSU isn't gonna buck on that.

Train with NLWC?  Isn't he a competitor now?

Train with Nickal? Nope!

Brooks?  Highly unlikely!

this is all based on the idea that brooks isn't the rep anymore. The NLWC has every interest in Taylor remaining affiliated if he can win another gold medal.

Without a TUE

That's right. The NFL plays on SUN, MON, THU and even SAT.

No TUE games.

Ok we keep hear about "the farm" so how many acres and how many cows?  All I've ever seen are pics and video of a small hobby farm not what most would call a farm or a ranch.

3 highland cows that I don't think are used for milk and definitely are not for beef they wear bows.
