Cael’s coaching tree

Recommended Posts

In the past it seems like the main coaching tree was Gable’s. Big wrestling programs were happy to hire former Gable wrestlers.

But now the tide may be turning. We may see more of Cael’s guys in the coaching ranks in the future.

Of course, college wrestling may soon be cooked, so who knows.

Cael is a branch off the Griffith tree correct?

Griffith tree???

Griffith - Roderick - Douglas - Sanderson - Taylor

Simple branches don't become new trees correct?

I was able to think back to Roderick but didn’t know who Griffith was. Well done.

Gallagher didn't coach Griffith so Griffith has his own tree, if I remember correctly.

Would you count Snyder on this tree?  I don't really see many other big time candidates at the moment, not to say that there won't be others in the future.

Iowa-trained coaches include (from the top of my head) Dresser, Ryan, Goldman, Zelesky, Davis, and Schwab. Not sure if they all looked like big-time hires when they began their coaching careers.

Gable and thus all his branches are part of the Cliff Keen tree via Harold Nichols

Cliff Keen - Harold Nichols - Dan Gable - ...

I knew who Griffith was, but didn't see the connection, but you are right!  I think Jeff Jordan should get some serious credit for David Taylor as well.....tremendous high school coach at St. Paris Graham and David was the 1st 4X Ironman champion under Jeff.  To this day the only other one is Zahid Valencia.  Two of the guys David had beat for his first 2 titles were Boris Novachkov his freshman year, and Logan Steiber his sophomore year.

Born in Reno, Nevada, Taylor attended Graham High School in St. Paris, Ohio. As a high schooler, Taylor became a four-time OHSAA state champion with an outstanding 180–2 record and graduated with a 4.0 GPA. He received the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award in 2009 as the nation's top high school wrestler.[8][9]

Jeff Jordan's coaching resume is a great one too.

Craig Henning got screwed in the 2007 NCAA Finals.
