a few years ago (maybe 5) some books were donated to our schools library at the HIGH school.

the librarian saw they were books that might interest me... so she asked if I would read them to see if they were appropriate for kids.

I read them, they were great.

I told her what was in them.

some sex...nothing super graphic... but basic r rated sex scenes

she said i could keep them

And this is the main issue and hence why my Thermodynamics analogy.  Its economics: allocation of scarce resources among competing ends.  The school library has a very limited budget so why would they spend the money to buy books that aren't appropriate for the age group.  Thermodynamics is not a cheap book.

Offended and age-appropriate are not the same things. 

Purity culture, religious nut jobs that refuse to teach their children about sex until they are of the age of marriage(which in some cases is WELL below the age of 18, we can discuss what 'well below' means, but by your logic even one day is too far) would be offended by kissing or holding hands or any of a bunch of mundane things that many other people wouldn't even blink at. 

Lack of education and exposure to knowledge are just a few of the reasons we are having this conversation. Ignorance begets ignorance.

Are you uncomfortable with a 5th grader learning about the two moms or two dads that at class mate has?

Fair point. But since you have not provided evidence that that is actually happening. I will go ahead and not believe that what you are saying is true, given the current amount of evidence. 

If you wish at some point in the future to provide more/better evidence I might be brought to your side. As it stands I am not. 

Have you seen these things with your own eyes or are you just taking someone else's word for it? Because, you know people lie. They lie all the time. Lie about big things and small things. They lie to try to make you think they are better/smarter or more moral than they really are. That's a big one. 'Do as I say, not as I do' is big for people trying to convince you something is immoral. Funny that your name is what it is.

I don't care about last summer. Maybe this is the wrong format for you to make your case if getting booted is a possibility. 

I've SEEN a person try to offer up bad evidence, have been SHOWN nothing, and yes I still don't believe. That shouldn't be shocking to you. Is evidence of things unseen in your wheelhouse? Cuz that's not gonna do much for me either, fyi.

A book that received the Alex Award for books meant for 12 to 18 year old readers. 

Probably not appropriate for 5th graders across the board. Some parents might be ok with it though. At a school library for 6th grade and up, should be fine. So at a neighborhood public library, sure. Again, have the conversations with your kids. 

But let me just reiterate. No one has put forth any evidence that this book has appeared anywhere inappropriate. 

If you don't like the book and would rather it not be in your child's 5th grade library. I can understand that. If that library also serves 6th graders and up, then you might be out of luck. You should contact the school to see about restricting this material from being checked out. If not, talk to your kids about material that is appropriate. But understand that they will become curious about this stuff eventually. 

Its a sad day when they grow up. Even just a little bit. But it is how things are meant to work. Don't punish other people because you can't deal with it.

The ultimate irony here is that the people freaking out about them are making the books far more popular than they ever would have been. Gender Queer sold 5,000 copies initially and was marketed for young adults. There's a bit of a straw man in this thread acting like this was getting promoted to elementary school kids. Just not true. It is mostly in high school libraries with occasional middle school libraries.

Middle school is debatable and I'm fine with not having it in them, but it's just ludicrous to believe high schoolers aren't old enough to handle this subject material (speaking of Gender Queer). Every one of these kids has access to the internet where they can *actually access real porn* if they want.

So stop saying books were banned then...because you just indicated you agree with what has happened in most cases at schools...aka, books were not banned.
