Governor Landry suggests pulling scholarships for athletes who skip National Anthem.

Louisiana Gov. Landry suggests pulling scholarships for athletes who skip the National Anthem. I happen to think that is a wonderful idea. What are your thoughts. LSU vs Iowa women's basketball game.

College teams not being on the field/court during the anthem is common.

Mulkey said it wasn't a protest, "Honestly, I don't even know when the anthem was played. We kind of have a routine when they're on the floor and they come off at the 12-minute mark. I don't know, we come in and we do our pregame stuff. I'm sorry, listen, that's nothing intentionally done."

I'm indifferent to the routine teams have before games.

I wonder if the athletes and the coach had to decide between being present and stand for  National Anthem or the lose their scholarship or contract, what would they choose? The National Anthem takes 90.5 seconds.

The teams should know when the anthem is played and be on the floor for that.   Like all the fans.   That should be the expectation for all teams.   The teams should be out on the field or court for the official pre game activities, which the National Anthem is part of.

My experience is that they introduce the teams and then do the National Anthem.   I don't think the governors idea would be legally valid for what Vak states, although I personally think that is an abuse of free speech.   You are there, your scholly is partially paid for by the government both state and federal, show some appreciation and respect.   It is just common courtesy.

Mulkey's statement is very disengenious. She knows exactly when it is played and she knows exactly why they won't be on the floor for the playing National Anthem. It has nothing to do with a team meeting. It is and was  intentionally done.

I find it extremely weird that a pregame routine wouldn't include being on the court/field/mat for the national anthem.  As for teams that aren't on the court for the national anthem, whatever I guess...I wouldn't have noticed seeing as I don't pay that much attention to womans basketball...well basketball in general I guess.  Again I just find it weird that a coach would have a pregame routine that doesn't include being part of the national anthem.

As for the governor, sounds like he is a strong believer that athletes who receive state funding should be on the court and standing for the national anthem.  Guess that is on Louisianans, anas, in...or whatever they are called, to decide.  I do like the way they talk and their food though...

Thank you. I was holding my breath for this one.

Not all scholarships are state funded. Some of the things states don't like paying for are athletic scholarships. So, conceivably, they have no authority to pull a scholarship and would open themselves up to HUGE lawsuits. Because taking a scholarship is pretty difficult.

Prove that you know Mulkey's statement was false or shut up. Just shut up. You're embarrassing. As much as you wish it was true and that it might be. DOES. NOT. MAKE. IT. SO. But thank you for allowing me another opportunity to correct you in all caps.

In your fever-dream scenario, do the fans need to be in their seats for the anthem?

Why don't you insist the anthem be played at any other event, movies, plays, rec league softball games? Just shut up!

Was the anthem played at every single sporting event in the history of these USsofA? No. Then shut up!

When was the last time you saw any wrestlers for the national anthem at the NCAA tournament?

Because of the venue and the type of event is my guess.  They ask the wrestlers to leave the mat and the timing of the anthem isn't conducive to having all the teams and their wrestlers out there.  My guess is the wrestlers, unless up right away, stop what they are doing and respect the anthem.  And that was my experience when I use to help coach our national team at Fargo.

It's literally the definition of a free speech violation.  It would be a government entity punishing somebody for their speech.

Even if it was a requirement to receive a scholarship, and/or required to receive state funding?

Anyone interpret that for me ^^^^^

It's OK to enjoy the freedom and the liberty that the Flag and the National Anthem symbolize without having to show the respect for the very people who afforded that Freedom and Liberty.

Exactly . You maybe 25  basketball players vs. 300 to 2000 wrestlers at the tournaments I have competed in and coached in. The National Anthem is always played and I have never seen one person leave or kneel down.

When you start making excuses for a group you favor based on logistics, you really do not have an argument at all.

Drowning in data, but thirsting for knowledge

Yes, because the government would not be able to make such a requirement.  The government can not do something like this where they are regulating an individual's speech (although Gov. Landry is free to criticize the person or persons involved).  Knowing the coach of LSU and her rep, I would highly doubt this is anything related to a protest and probably more related to her old-school ways and routine.

This is just not true.  The wrestlers, where they are located when the anthem starts, stop and pay tribute.  Do the basketball players stop what they are doing in the locker room and pay tribute...my guess is no.  Does this bother me, not really...just think it is stupid is all, but who cares?!  🙂

Got it..thanks.  But a coach could make a rule that his/her/their players stand/pay tribute when the anthem is playing and this is not covered under free speech?

Your last sentence. You honestly don't believe that? You honestly don't believe she didn't know the National was going to be played at a certain time?

I would doubt that in terms of scholarship given he's still a government employee, but could probably have a workaround related to playing time.

You are free to Google Kim Mulkey.
