I bet JB is scared.

Recommended Posts

I can't believe it took this topic so long to pop up. Nickal's outrage is either based on something he won't say or wanting attention. Then Starocci pops up to remind everyone that he's a very boring villain.

Where does Dake sit here, in the finals?

Burroughs will have to win 2-3 matches to get to him?  Both Nolf and Starocci?????

Rethorford is sitting in the bottom semi-finals as well.

Crazy he would go up, seems too small.

the poor guy must have no choice. His style isn't bad for bumping up. He hand fights hard but is not what I think of as physical, he wears people out with fakes and snapping the top of thier heads, as opposed to someone like starocci who spends a lot of time in a deep collar pulling straight down.

Honestly don't know.  Mum has been the word.  His public appearances have been minimal as well so we can't see his current state.

He is a shell at 65 KG compared to 70 KG... so 74 KG is wishful thinking.

That said... here is who is out to the bottom side semi-finals (picture attached to show format of last OTT)...

Arujau at 57 KG (or 65 KG)

Retherford at 74 KG (or 65 KG)

Valencia at 86 KG (or 97 KG)

57 KG and 65 KG will be full, proper brackets with the finalist making the following say Best of Three.  Meaning if Arujau and Retherford would need to only win one match to make the best of three.

74 KG, 86 KG, 97 KG, and 125 KG have a returning medalist sitting out to the Best of Three. Meaning Valencia and Retherford (if he goes 74 KG) will have to win two to make the following day's best of three finals.

Now that I am thinking the method to make the best of three finals, I am thinking 65 KG makes more sense...  I still want him in at 74 KG.

Jordan Burroughs: I just don't see it happening.  Too much to ask of the old guy.

What tough tourney did JB just win?  If you're referring to Yasar Dogu, the field was watered-down because it was not a ranking series event this year.

He hasn't made scratch 74kg since he lost the OTT to Dake in April '21.  His two recent events at 74kg (Yasar Dogu, March '24; Kunaev, Nov '23) were both single-day events with a 2kg weight allowance.

74kg was always a tough cut for him. At the OTT, He'll have to make scratch weight both days AND win the challenge bracket.  Going back to when he first made a World Team in 2011, Burroughs has NEVER had to go through a challenge tourney bracket to make a World or Olympic team.  He won the US Open in 2011 to get a bye, and This year, he'll have to go through the following just to get to Dake:

  • 2023 Bill Farrell champion – Jason Nolf (Nittany Lion WC)
  • 2024 NCAA D1 champion at 165 lbs - David Carr (Iowa State)
  • 2024 NCAA D1 champion at 174 lbs - Carter Starocci (Penn State)
  • 2023 U20 World champion – Mitchell Mesenbrink (Askren Wrestling Academy)
  • 2023 U23 World champion – Keegan O'Toole (Tiger Style WC)
  • 2023 Senior Nationals champion – Quincy Monday (NJRTC/Titan Mercury WC)
  • 2023 Senior Nationals 2nd place – Alex Marinelli (Hawkeye WC/Titan Mercury WC)
  • 2023 Senior Nationals 3rd place – Alex Facundo (Nittany Lion WC/Titan Mercury WC)
  • 2023 Senior Nationals 4th place – Jarrett Jacques (Tiger Style WC)
  • 2023 Senior Nationals 5th place – Tyler Berger (Pennsylvania RTC)
  • 2024 NCAA D1 champion at 157 lbs - Levi Haines (Penn State)
  • Whomever survives the 34-man Last Chance Qualifier bracket (Vincenzo Joseph?)

Of that long list, Nolf and Starocci are the only ones with a decent shot at JB. KOT has a minor shot. The rest none at all. IMHO of course.

Does Starocci go with Dake in the room. Crazy that Nolf, Starocci and Dake are all practicing together.

Bo and David are quite a bit bigger than Burroughs.  Not sure why they feel so tough calling him out.

All those crazy bible thumpers who preach against alcohol somehow don't seem to realize their very own Jesus provided wine at his own wedding.

It's a bad look for wrestling in general.  MMA/UFC is half WWE, the false bravado, the calling people out. Bo is brining that into his life. It may be a needed piece of his career, now, but it's not necessary in wrestling. And Starocci saying he's going to end Boroughs career... It's all moving to social media click bait.

Thats a great question. Wouldn't be surprised if none of em have practiced regularly at the same time in months, letalone as partners. I bet they spend more time wrestling people at other weights.

Is he drinking alcohol?  My understanding was that Nickal didn't touch alcohol, not to mention he has a fight in less than a week.  Seems a weird time to start.

Obviously your point is still valid, but did Burroughs have to go through a bracket in 2017 after losing at the olympics? I think we saw a realistic view of what Burroughs has left last year vs Marstellar. He is certainly not my favorite to even make the finals against Dake, but if you aren't on your game he will get you. If he makes the finals it will be from championship experience.

No.  He got a bye to the final on the basis of winning the US Open, a 2-2 criteria win over Kyle Dake.  At the WTT, he lost the first match to Dake, then won two straight to make the world team.
