Poaching or Portal?

Where are you coming up with this stuff?  You can obviously knock them for not developing guys in recent years, but then you go make stuff up about how they just try to bring guys in from elsewhere.  They had fewer transfer points in their lineup than almost any big school at the NCAA tournament.

Besides Plott and Fix how many points did they get from guys they recruited out of HS? There were several guys on their squad last year that were transfers, are you saying there weren't?

1 Penn State 58.5 172.5 34%
2 Michigan 52.5 71 74%
3 Iowa 40.5 67 60%
4 Oregon State 19.5 20 98%
5 Iowa State 18 68.5 26%
6 Oklahoma 17 20 85%
7 Lock Haven 13.5 14 96%
8 Oklahoma State 12 56 21%
9 Arizona State 11 64.5 17%
10 Rutgers 10 22.5 44%

They were 8th in points from transfers.  And they got a lower percentage from transfers than PSU, Michigan, or Iowa.

Thank you for that graphic.  A sad one in my opinion … but … it’s a true reflection of where D1 College Wrestling is at.

Penn St., Michigan, & Iowa scoring 150 points between them.  That speaks for itself.

8th in points from transfers is pretty high when there are, what, 72 schools with wrestling programs?

Well like everything with NCAA tournament scoring, it’s heavily weighted by high placers.  After PSU, Iowa and Michigan, most of those points were from 1 guy (including OSU).

Munoz OrSU 17

Buchanan OU 17

Echemendia ISU 13.5

Noto LH 13.5

Olejnik OkSU 10

Of course OSU would have had more from transfers if Spratley did better which many predicted him to do although we know 125 was crazy.

Jamison, the 10 seed, went 0-2 after being ranked top 8 much of the year.

OU made out like a bandit with Buchanon, didn't they? I think he accounted for most of OU's team score.

It's pretty high if you want to make a point about how almost every top school has lots of transfers or a point about the fact that almost 25% of the total points at NCAAs were scored by transfers.  But if you're trying to make a point about OSU specifically being a school that poaches guys, then no it is not pretty high.

Yep.  All three were transfers.  But if you want to make a point about how they don't develop and only poach, then guys like Spratley and Jamison don't make sense.  Both were undeveloped non-starters who had never been to NCAAs at the time of their transfer.  Then they combined for 2 points.  OSU will get nothing out of either without lots of development.  You could say OSU poached them, but you can't say they didn't develop whatever they are and become.

Olejnik was definitely a classic one year poach.  Hamiti will be.  Having one guy like that in lineup still puts them well behind the teams near the top (just like they are behind those teams in most areas right now).

Maybe Minny poached them then decided they didn't want them so they came home.  There's no indication John would spend money and scholarship on two backups who couldn't make the lineup, maybe they were sick of being cold.

Moreover, look at their starting lineup.  If I counted correctly 8 starters from Oklahoma and thats about where it's been the last several years.  Not exactly a team thats living off of poaching.  And if Hamiti replaces Thompson it could be 9 next year but more likely ~ 8 again.  How many other teams have 8 to 9 home state starters?

Think I've figured out NM1965's username.  Hes been stuck in northeast New Mexico since 1965 would like to immigrate into the OK panhandle but they won't let him cross the border so he is mad at everything Oklahoma.  🤨

we’re all sick of being cold, I don’t blame them for that

Okay, I guess that is last year, now.  But with Spratley and Jamison, it’s more like a homecoming than transfer.  Like they were poached out of high school.  Spratley wrestled for Collinsville, the same school that Jordan Williams wrestled for.  Jamison for Durant.  I suspect that there was communication before they went to Minnesota, and one Minneapolis winter was enough.

Jamison:  High School: Attended Durant High School before transferring to Plano West High School, where he competed for three seasons and graduated in 2021 … Was a two-time UIL Texas state champion at 132 pounds as a senior and sophomore … Finalist in all four years of his high school career, including as a true freshman for Durant at 126 pounds … Completed high school with a career prep record of 124-4 … Freestyle Fargo national champion at 138 pounds in 2021 … Captured back-to-back USAW Preseason national championships in 2018 and 2019 … Earned All-America honors with a third-place finish at the 2022 U.S. Open … Is a two-time All-American at the U20 United States World Team Trials.

Spratley:  High School: Graduated from Plano West High School alongside fellow Minnesota transfer and current teammate Tagen Jamison … Wrestled outside of high school competition with Texas Pride for his final two years … Claimed an Oklahoma state title at 120 pounds as a sophomore while at Collinsville High School … Won a Pennsylvania prep state title as a freshman … Champion of the 2022 U.S. Open at 57 kilograms … Was a finalist at both the Junior World Team Trials in 2022.
