From Humble Beginnings (or not)

Recommended Posts

I was thinking about how unlikely it is to  have two true freshman as the 1 and 2 seed at a weight (125).

Then I thought maybe it is not that big a deal if they were already a big deal, so I look at where they were on Willie's Big (Deal) Board.

  • Turns out they came from well outside the top 15-20, which is where most champs come from, if I recall correctly.
  • But Cade DeVos takes the cake for the most unlikely given where he was ranked coming out of high school. At least he has had some time to marinate in the SDSU room.

125 is a weird weight to predict from high school.  Hard to know who will hold that weight as they age into their 20s, and the freshman have to compete against grown men instead of 14 and 15 year olds.

Craig Henning got screwed in the 2007 NCAA Finals.

What was Yonger’s success prior to college?

How in the world did Iowa state find these dudes from Cuba and will it continue?

Thank you so much! That was a great read!

dudes a stud, apparently he wants to rep the US on the senior level before making a jump to MMA. He’s going to kill it whatever he does in terms of combat sports!

Is there some way for Bastida to rep Puerto Rico or Mexico?

Braeden has blossomed under Caels tutilage and Stanich is a PA kid,    Team Willie.

Except apparently Cael said he kinda knew he’d be the starter since the beginning of the season…

He is a stud, but what I noticed is he was 21 years old during the article and 22 years old when he began his freshman year. Most kids are 19 their first year in college, that had to be a huge advantage for him.
