Gomez more likely to injury default out after qualifying for the Olympics?

Recommended Posts

What do you all think?  His knee looked like it wasn't in great shape.  Folkstyle is tougher on knees overall than Freestyle.  Is he about to D Schlatter his way out of NCAA's or Big Tens?

If I was Bormet, I might seriously consider putting someone else in at 149.  Having an Olympian in your room is way bigger than an NCAA title.  I wouldn't risk it if I were Bormet, even though it will reduce the team's chances of placing high.

I doubt it.  Unlike the US guys, Gomez' next competition after B1G & NCAA would be the Olympic Games.  Plenty of time to heal and have a style changeover.

Gomez wants that NCAA title he's definitely wrestling at NCAAs. Nobody will be in his spot in the line up .  This was the plan all along . Olympics are in August he has plenty of time

I can't imagine anybody sitting out NCAAs because he qualified for the Olympics.

How about somebody sitting out NCAAs because he wants to qualify for the Olympics? Could be a tough decision for Starocci, depending on the severity of his injury.

Let's say he tore his ACL, how does sitting out help him?

Risk mitigation?

A partial tear could turn into a full blown grade 3 rupture between NCAAs and trials (or the LCQ if he doesn't win at Nationals). The instablity could lead to other injuries. He'd be able to train through Nationals and have more time to get his conditioning back up to speed. He'd have a full month's rest between his injury at the LCQ.

An ACL tear is an ACL tear, you don't recover from it unless have surgery, there isn't time for that.  Generally after a week+ swelling down and you can do what you want but if doing something like wrestling where stability is important you're going to wear a brace.  Why would you do anymore damage while wearing a knee brace?

Well, if that's his dream. But since 79kg isn't an Olympic weight class wouldn't that man he'd have to bump up to 86kg and face David Taylor? Or does he drop to 74kg and challenge Kyle Dake?  I'm not sure I like his chances against either of those guys. Plus even at the non-Olympic weight of 79kg I think he might have problems with Dieringer.

I hope he does what he thinks is right. PSU would miss his points at NCAAs, but they will probably still win by 50 points even if he skips NCAAs.

Larry Langowski wrestled for Mexico in Beijing, it wasn't really a big deal for the Wildcat Wrestling Club.

Craig Henning got screwed in the 2007 NCAA Finals.

I did not know that.  I'm rather surprised they didn't hype that up more.

But...then again, NW may have just turned its nose up at the idea of athletics mattering at all.
