Will Yonger Bastida beat Hendrickson? Will he beat Kerkvliet?

Bastida reminds me of Anthony Cassar since he's basically a pumped up 197 pounder. He's fast and athletic compared to the fat boys. Kerkvliet isn't a fat boy either, and he's bigger. What do you think of Bastida's chances against Hendricksen and Kerk? I think Bastida might have the best chance at beating Kerkvliet, provided he can get through the fat boys.

Bastida is wrestling Zach Elam on Sunday, Bastida is 19-0 and Elam is 20-0. Who do you think wins this one?

I think Bastida will likely land 5-6.  He doesn’t look like he has the weight or horsepower to go that entire tournament without getting surprised by an unobtrusive big guy who knows how to hold position.  I think something like a doucet quarterfinal could be a problem for him, even though he handled doucet no problem earlier in the year.

That sounds reasonable. I think it's possible he'll run into somebody like Schultz, just a huge guy with too much power for Bastida to handle. But, I remember how Cassar made it look easy against the big boys too.

Definitely.

One thing I can’t help noticing is that Bastida is a bit “fluffier” than Cassar was.  Some guys can wear that well, but for guys making the transition up a weight, that (usually, not always) can lead to guys being outmatched either in strength or in their lungs deeper in the tournament.

Bastida doesn't look fluffy when throwing other HWTs over his head ... just say'n.

This was a big discussion prior to the season about Younger Dave Batista. There were a couple of us on the side that he would do great moving up to HWT... there were many who said he wouldn't be in the top 16. He's had a great season so far. I can see him anywhere from 3-8. I see him beating Elam but not WH.... or whatever symbols you want to use <> .. .. #$*&$

Who said he wouldn’t be in top 16?  He is just another in a long line of wrestlers to move up from 197 to HWT and do just as good or better, proving that there is no need for a weight between 197 & heavyweight

Agree.... In a thread earlier this year prior to the season, which I will eventually dig up, there was a conversation about him going from 5th to R16 at 197 and declining... not showing that he would handle the weight jump if he can't handle 197... etc.  I was on the other end, as there were a few who believed he would be tough at HWT.

197s always do better going up to heavyweight because heavies are great big fat guys who eat too much and don’t shoot.

Exactly! Fat bums like Kerkvliet and Hendrickson and Davison and Elam and Feldman and Pitzer and Keuter and Catka that never shoot!

He's got a point about 197s doing well at HWT though. Good 197s seem to always thrive at HWT. Even in HS in my day a good 190 would usually spank a HWT.
