Attendance reported as 2,546. The dual was at Annapolis. Here's Navy's take: The Mids needed Smith to pin No. 31 Matt Williams to win the dual. Smith opened the match on a great note by scoring two takedowns in the first period to gain a 6-2 lead. Smith went up, 7-2, after scoring an escape in the second, but Williams responded with his first takedown to decrease his deficit to just two points. Williams started the third period with an escape to make the score, 7-6. Later in the third, Smith scored his third takedown and shifted Williams on his back. Smith looked to be close to a pin on multiple occasions, but the officials only gave him a four-point near fall. Although Smith won the match by a 17-8 major decision, his win only scored Navy four points. Gunner Filipowicz upset Cerniglia at 165. Red Blades
Well - there were a couple of moments when there might have been a fall, but I couldn't clearly see both shoulders down from the camara angle. The guy with the striped shirt certainly had a better view than I. Maybe at 1:03 or so, and at that point the Navy bench may have had the best look. KLCarnegieTech_1969
It looked like it was a fall but there was no way of knowing if the left shoulder was down because the view was blocked (on tv). The cradle was tight. Ref was not in position. I will tell you the announcers were such Navy homers. You can't call a pin if you are not in position or a complete view of the shoulder blades was blocked. Topper
Smith apparently didn't get the geometry quite right... Edited February 19, 2024 by Topper
