Would adding a Dual Championship actually change anything?

Recommended Posts

Many on this board blame Cael for single handedly killing a National Dual Championship, which I think is BS.  However, assuming we could magically add a National Dual Championship does this actually change anything (i.e. does another team actually win it?) or does it just add another trophy to Penn State's trophy case each year?

This year it seems pretty certain barring catastrophic injuries or illness that Penn State will win Big 10s and NCAAs.  Add a dual championship and Penn State just gets another 1st place trophy, no?

We've already done the annual Dual Championship thread.  We've also done the annual greatest to never win it.  Haven't seen the annual if they would've wrestled thread how would this athlete in a other sport have done or the annual NFL guys who wrestled.  You could do one of those broken record threads.

A lot of times it’s not going to change who wins.  But it would be a great event for fans to watch, and would make money for the NCAA and teams involved.

The difference in scoring between the 2 formats could make a difference in the early rounds though.  It kinda stinks that solid dual teams with most of their team ranked in the teens & 20’s but no top 5 or so guys don’t really score many points at NCAA’s

I do not believe that anyone is arguing that PSU would not run away with a dual championship but the thought of having a bracketed dual meet tournament composed of the best teams from different conferences is exciting for the sport. Besides NCAAs the most exciting events in the season are great duals like NC State/V-Tech, Ohio State/V-tech, Iowa/Iowa State. This allows fans of a particular school to have two hours that they can actively cheer or follow their team consecutively. It's hard to grow a fanbase in an individual tournament when the team you are following may not have a guy on the mat for 45 min at a time, it doesn't engage the people who are not following wrestling to the degree as people on this forum. This is nothing new that has not been discussed before and it has not gained any traction in the minds of the decision makers so I digress.

What I would like to see is teams be able to enter two at each weight for conference tournaments and be able to have two under consideration for The Big Dance. So what if one team has their guys 1st and 2nd - if they can do it, more power to them.

Penn State would run away with it this year. But the last time teams competed in a decent version of the National Duals (2015), Mizzou beat Iowa in the finals. Ohio State won NCAAs, but lost to Lehigh in the quarterfinals of the dual tourney.
