OSU Mid Season Report

Recommended Posts

Ohio State Buckeyes, 8-1 on the season with a nice finish at CKLV.
B1G schedule starts in five days.

Illinois on the 12th.
Maryland on the 19th.
Wisconsin on the 21st.
Michigan on the 26th.
Penn St. on the 2nd.
Rutgers on the 4th.
Indiana on the 11th.
Michigan State on the 16th to finish up the dual season.

All but one of these duals is winnable, with a question mark against Michigan (it's a home dual which should help).

Mid Season report card.

125 Brendan McCrone, 13-6 overall. He's been good. McCrone is young and he looks it. He'll get better with experience. Quality wins over Camacho and Ventrusca. Lost close matches to Medley and Volk. He's going to miss Ramos, Smith, Ayala and McKee until the B1G tourney. C+

133
Nic Bouzakis, 16-5 overall. Nic has taken some head scratching losses, and has had some quality wins. If he keeps his weight under control he's a tough out. He's been a terror on the backside. The schedule favors him the rest of the season. B-

141
Jesse Mendez, 15-1 overall. He's been really good. Last second loss to Matthews is his only blemish. He handled Hardy and Jack. Mendez has Bartlett and Moore left. He will miss Woods until the B1G tourney. A

149
Dylan D'Emilio, 17-4 overall. Having a great season. His pace is improved. Has beaten Arrington and Swiderski with losses to Arrington, Parco and Lovett. He still has Gomez and gets Lovett again. Will miss Van Ness(injury) and Voinovich until the B1G tourney. B

157
Paddy Gallagher, 16-5 overall. He's had a good season. He's been better on the mat and he's been finishing his shots. He still has Chumbley, Lewan and Haines. He'll miss Blaze, Franek and Robb until B1G. B-

165
Isaac Wilcox, 10-5 / Bryce Hepner, 2-1 - Wilcox won the early season wrestle off and has manned the 165 spot most of the season. Has a good win against Brady. He's been a solid wrestler for the Bucks. C- Bryce Hepner 2-1 overall. Had a close loss to Ramirez, unlucky not get to SV in that match. No Grade. It'll be interesting to see what happens the rest of the season here. Still have Fish, Gilcher, Messenbrink, Amine and Hamiti.

174 Carson Kharchla, 12-3 / Rocco Welsh, 11-1 overall. Kharch has a loss to #3, #7 and a medical. He's looked really good at 174, but the injuries wont leave him alone. A- If Kharchla is unable to finish the season we have a great, "backup" in Welsh. He's young, dynamic and pacey. His lone loss is a MFF. A
Whomever mans the spot still has, Starocci, Griffith and Ruth on the schedule. We miss Kennedy/Arnold, Washington and Wilson until the B1G tourney.

184 Seth Shumate, 6-2 / Gavin Hoffman, 5-4 overall. Shumate began the season and had a good start at the Open tourneys. One of his losses was to his RS teammate, Rogotzke. Shumate hasn't wrestled since the Edinboro dual. I believe he gets some more matches in the future. C- Hoffman has wrestled the majority of the matches since. He's struggled, but OSU must believe he's their best option? This is not the Same Hoffman that beat Sloan, Bonaccorsi, Woodley, Bulsak, Caffey and Amos. We still wrestle Truax and Bullock but we miss Pinto, Salazar and Assad until the B1G tourney. D

197
Luke Geog, 7-5 overall. I've been waiting on Geog to start his OSU career. It's been a pretty bumpy start. Had a disappointing CKLV. A nice win over Smith(VT) Was beaten soundly by Stout of Pitt and TF'ed by Hidlay (NCST) I'm confidant he's going to be the guy at 197 for the future and this year is going to be an, "experience season." He still has to face Brooks, Smith, Braunagel and Poznanski. Geog misses Glazier and Allred until the B1G tourney. C-

285
Nick Feldman, 14-3 overall. We've all been waiting on Feldman. This season will serve as his real RS season as an injury early in 2022 and a subsequent surgery delayed his start as a Buckeye. Quality wins over Fernandes (2x) and Catka. Losses to Trephan, Ghiadiali (injured but finished) and Bastida. I feel much the same as I do about Geog when considering Feldman. This will be a learning season. Feldman is good now and if he stays healthy he'll become a force. He's small for the weight and length will be a problem for him. His low single has been his bread and butter. He's quick and agile for a guy built like an outhouse. Coming up Feldman will have Kerk, Davison, Slavikowski, Luffman and Nevills. Still not sure about Steveson. If he comes back we miss him until the B1G tourney. That's a tough finish to the season.

A few other Buckeyes:

125 Vinnie Kilkeary, 17-6 overall. He's wrestled really well. Has wins over Lujan and Treaster. 7th at Midlands.
133 Andre Gonzales, 17-6 overall. Just no place for him on the roster. Has a win over Ragusin.
184 Ryder Rogotzke, 12-5 overall. He's been good and has nine falls on the season. Perhaps our best choice at 184. I'd rather he just keep the RS though.

Agree with most of the grades except D’Emilio and Gallagher. Dylan is an A, he is on track to AA and score over 10 points at nationals. I’d lobby for A+ for Jesse as I think he wins a title this year. Paddy gets a B for year over year improvement, but I see his performance in-line with Geog.

Parco and Lovett beat Dylan 11-1. Losses to Henson and Arrington keeps him from being an A.

Losses to Downey and Andonian (2x) plus Scott. I wouldn't, "Die on the hill" if you want to move Paddy from a B- to a B. It really doesn't seem worth mentioning but I'm okay with it...

If Jesse wins the National tourney he'll be an A+.

When did Gonzales beat Ragusin?

Also, what Grade does Feldman get?

Also, also, Geog is not quite a full 197lber, yet.  He gets himself up to 210-215lbs and he will be.  He won't grow during the season, though.  He can't keep the caloric intake up.  I think he weighed in at 196.4 at the National Duals, but I am not sure what he is cutting from (if at all).  He doesn't look lean, large, or long.

  • 2 weeks later...

Geog had 1-0, freshman wrestler and Feldman had 5th year guy with a 5-3 record.
McCrone was a surprise but he's been that all season. Bouzakis handled the seasoned vet.
Mendez was good. D'Emilio lost to a 10-1 true freshman. Good match...
Wilcox had a win down a weight class. Hepner did what we've been waiting for.
Welsh was the wrestler of the night for The Bucks. In a Loss. Shumate got a win he should have against a 10-17 sophomore.

Great start! Have to win the matches you should. Especially if you're a Buckeye. Maryland coming up....
