Interesting Iran vs US

It is interesting that many headlines are talking about the geopolitical mess playing out in the Iran/US world cup game.  Compare that to the positive Iran/US wrestling relationship. The wrestling community should be proud.

Well . . . to be perfectly honest, in my humble opinion, and of course without offending anyone who thinks differently from my point of view, but also by looking into this matter from various differentiated perspectives and without condemning another's perspective but still trying to be objective and disinterested in my analysis, and by considering each and every sound argument, I honestly believe that I completely forgot what I was going to say.

Well, I guess positive relationships between wrestling countries when the remainder of those countries are globally at odds is not such a big deal after all. But, I'll still take the open respect between Iran and US wrestling. Wrestling is doing what Olympic sports were designed to do, bring countries together for positive competition. Even chess can't claim to be doing that.

US-England drew 20 million viewers. US-Iran will also have a sizable TV audience.

If and when there are a lot more Americans paying attention to wrestling, there will be much more scrutiny of our matches with Iran.

I'm rooting for the USA in this game against Iran.   I would rather we get to the final rather than Iran.  Period.  I do the same when we wrestle them.

Cael Sanderson did not wrestle in his first World Championship hosted in Tehran, Iran, in 2002.  Nobody from the USA attended.

Every Iranian person I've met has been great.  The two best specialist physicians I've ever had were Iranian and were deeply caring, patient-first doctors.  Like a lot of situations, there is a difference between "the people" and the current ruling government/religion/government-religion of countries.

To be fair, I think there's a mutual respect among US and Iranian soccer players too, just as there is among wrestlers.  We saw that before, during and after the game this week.  I've always been impressed with Iranian athletes' sportsmanship, and US athletes have generally reciprocated it.

If there's a difference, it is in the sports' governing bodies.  Can you imagine USA Wrestling sending out a tweet that desecrates the Iranian flag, as did US Soccer?  Not in a million years. I'm all for human rights and all, and I'd love to see Iranian women have more freedoms, but what the US Soccer Federation did was beyond disrespectful.  USA Wrestling, to its credit, has NEVER mixed politics and sports that I can recall.  

I guess there was a little dust-up last year about some Iranian staff members being denied their visas and then refusing to send their team to a dual in the US, but I think the Iranians understood that was the Department of State, not USA Wrestling.

Generally speaking, most people in the world are kind and generous.  Iranians are no exception.

What I noticed in the Iran / US World Cup game was the complete lack of fake falls in the first half.  Second had a little bit of drama.  But nothing like I saw with the other teams.  Kinda proud of both teams in that regard.

There was a lot of compassion and camaraderie after the soccer match too...not exclusive to wrestling sorry.

How was it a mess? The Iranian soccer team was courageous in their actions at the world cup, and the US team offered them support.

I wrote a story about the USA-Iranian relationship, especially as it has been affected by wrestling on my site here.

That dust-up was actually pretty spectacular. America sent a missile to assassinate the second-most powerful person in Iran, their venerated Republican Guard General. 

In response, Alireza Dabir, the former World and Olympic champion and head of Iran's wrestling federation was quoted to say, "Death to America." 

He then went on to a indicate that any response shouldn't be with words but with actions. To complete the tic-tac-toe, the US denied Visas to him and five others.

(I think there was a generous amount of fault attributable to both parties. Hopefully, though, we can return to "Wrestling Diplomacy" with Iran. Did you know that, for the first time, Iran sent a Women's team to the 2015 World Grappling Championships--but not since then?).

Have they let this guy into the U.S. since? I could see why they don't want to after statements like that.

the Iranian fans here, as always, are VERY vocal and supportive of their wrestlers. The new thing they bring to this event are LOUD vocal protests of what is going on in Iran  and wanting major change at home.
