ILLINI versus Stupid Missouri

ILLINIWrestlingBlog

Recommended Posts

Unless you really dig Gardner-Webb or Sacred Heart, the big dual on Thursday is ILLINOIS against Missouri. It will be streamed on UFC Fight Pass. We've posted a preview at The ILLINI Wrestling Blog and Forum and Beyond. Some pre-dual questions for the Mizzou posters here:

1.  I watched the Missouri/Air Force dual on Sunday. Peyton Mocco rolled his ankle and had to take injury time to get his ankle taped up. Is he ready to go against the ILLINI? Has he been able to practice since that dual? If we're going to bet six figures on the ILLINI, we have a right to know. It's in the Second Amendment.

2.  Same question for Zach Elam, except it was his knee. Mocco and Elam are supposed to face Ruth and Luffman, making them the two marquee matchups. Will they happen?

3.  Missouri came out quickly and aggressively in that dual, and in the matches I watched, the Tiger wrestlers were in on takedowns either off the whistle or within :20. Has that been the case for y'all this year, or was it the competition?

4.  This question is for everybody: It is our first time using UFC Fight Pass. Is there anything we need to know about that streaming service? Good stream/bad stream? On time? Announcers? Casting to other devices? Easy to cancel?

5.  Again, a question for everybody: Should athletic departments start putting out injury reports for wrestling matches?

Below is a picture of Ben Askren in an argument with my wife. You can see me in the background yelling at him before running inside the camper and locking the door.

NIcely done - always enjoy your humor.

As far as UFC Fight Pass... they suck donk*y d*ck.

Hint: The wrestling audience has a finely tuned taste for technique - not bashing slugfests.

Can someone please explain why we need UFC pass to watch this?   Shouldnt sub to Flo, Espn+ and that StoneFlipper thing really be enough!?  Why isn't there a GWN and IWB streaming pass.  What's the point in holding the dual halfway in the Lou if you're not gonna stream it on something real fans subscribe to?

Guess I'll be watching another episode of Corner Gas tomorrow evening.  🤨

My opinion is that UFC provides the best production of college wrestling that I have seen. Great commentators, graphics on screen of the individual match scores, riding time, team score, and match time. The stream goes world wide bringing in a whole new audience of fans. These streams are viewed by thousands of viewers. There are several camera views of the action and they put on a show. I love the most valuable wrestler belt for each dual. They offered a 3 month subscription before the season where you paid $9.99 for one month and got 2 additional months for free.

If you like freestyle wrestling, sounds like pretty soon you will also need USAW+ or whatever they decide to name it

I just watched part of the Campbell/Purdue match on UFC Fight Pass. That is the entire  scope of my experience with the organization, but from what I saw, my friend, what you say is true. Nice production along with Shane Sparks and Joseph McKenna commentating.

During that match they did a promo for the ILLINOIS versus Mizzou dual. It was also very nicely done. Well, except for one small detail: They showed too many Missouri wrestlers. So, I decided to cut those guys out of the promo and put in only ILLINI wrestlers. This is how that turned out:

We learn more about Illinois injury situation from IWB than from the team itself (or any team that matter).  This information is vital for people planning around the event in anticipation of a certain matchup.

Keep in mind that the other side of  that is that there are people who are in the know, who want to continue to to be in the know by keeping good relationship with those in the program. A good way to sever that relationship and information privilege is by telling it to everyone on a message board.

By the way, I want to know how knowing this information is vital in planning around an event in anticipation of a certain matchup? How do you "plan around" a match up? Do people have singlets of their favorite wrestler they PLAN to wear to the match, then feel a little embarrassed when the match-up doesn't happen? Just curious how this info effects planning for a fan.

Even after omitting half the teams in the dual, that is a better hype video than anything I have ever seen at the NCAA level for wrestling. You want to grow fans in 2023? This is how. Dana White may be an S-tier scumbag but he is a scumbag with an international audience and wrestling would be keen to take notes.

I am not talking about people on the message board that should tell what they know- I'm talking about a formal injury report which would be submitted by coaches in advance of a dual or tournament.

How? I live within four hours drive of several colleges.  I don't want to drive my family there to see them put out a backup if the reason I'm driving out there in the first place is the promise of  a marquee matchup.  For example, last year, I was trying to figure out when I should go to Cal Baptist so I could see Mesenbrink.  The information was never available and Mesenbrink missed most duals and tournaments, which just discouraged me from going to any.  Lots of examples like that.  I'm actually shocked you wouldn't have understood that.

I usually don't plan to go to a dual to see one guy or see one match-up. I just got to the dual if I am going. If that's y our reasoning then that makes sense... but that's not how I would plan to see a dual.

I believe that is already the case and it started with the recent world championships. It used to be you could use a vpn set for another country to tap the free stream, avoiding Flo. But now there is no free stream. USAW+ for outside the US and Flo for inside.

Drowning in data, but thirsting for knowledge

That was UWW+ I believe, and it seems like USAW will be coming out with its own.

Couldn't agree more.  You have to keep subscribing to more and more platforms to watch your team wrestle.  F*ck that!  I'm tired of shelling out $X per month or per year, and then being told that I need to now pay another service to watch what I want.  And I could give 2 sh!ts about the quality of UFC Fight Pass.  Just show me the matches!

Did I mention Corner Gas is "free" on Prime.  🙂

Hopefully IWB is giving us a detailed play by play tonight.  I used to ride down to STL in the team bus to watch live.  Them were the good ole free days.

Anyone having trouble with the fightpass stream? I just signed up for this event and I'm only getting a red circle swirling on the screen. Bad 1st impression so far.

Say it ain't so bro!

I didn't sign up and I'm getting zip, anxiously waiting for the IWB pbp.
