What national champ has lost to the most national champs?

Maybe a question for @Wrestleknownothing

I was just looking at Pat Glory’s Wrestlestat and not sure if I had previously realized how impressive it was.

99-9.  Only 2 losses in his final 3 seasons (2020 cut short by Covid).  Here were his losses:

Suriano

Vito x2 (who he also beat)

Spencer x2

Picc x3 (who he also beat)

Rivera

So he lost to 5 guys, 3 of which were or became national champs.

Which got me to thinking…what national champ has lost to the most national champs?

I found some others that lost to 3 (such as Drew Foster and Myles Martin), but can’t seem to find any that lost to 4 or more but I assume it’s happened.

On the other end of the spectrum, Johnni DiJuliius has defeated two national champs (Brewer and Clark), while he himself never placed.

Julian Ramirez has also beaten two national champs (Griffith and now Carr), while not (yet) reaching the podium.

Dan Valimont (7) Gillespie, Leen, Schlatter, Burroughs, Howe, Reader, Jarrod King BUT he was at best a runner up

Cory Clark with FIVE : Nashon Garrett, Nathan Tomasello, Jesse Delgado, Nico Megaludis, Cody Brewer

J.P. O'Connor with SIX!  132-17 career (9 losses to six champs):

  • Jordan Leen, 3x (2007 Dual @ 149, 2007 EIWA @ 149, 2009 EIWA @ 157)
  • Dustin Schlatter (2007 NCAA @ 149)
  • Jordan Burroughs, 2x (2008 NCAA @ 149, 2008 Vegas @ 157)
  • Bubba Jenkins (2008 NCAA @ 149)
  • Darrian Caldwell (2008 NCAA @ 149)
  • Gregor Gillespie (2009 NCAA @ 157)

His other losses were to:

  • Josh Churella, 2x (2006 Vegas, 2007 NCAA)
  • Jake Patacsil (2006 Midlands)
  • Cesar Grajales (2008 EIWA)
  • Michael Chandler (2008-09 Dual)
  • Chase Pami (2009 NCAA R12)
  • I can't find the other two losses from his frosh season, which probably occurred in open tourneys.  He only had one dual loss that season, and I've got the Vegas and Midlands results.

good pull, Lu.

Duane Goldman has to be up there. didn't he go 2, 2, 2, 1 ?

so three at minimum.

Thanks.  Not sure about Goldman.  Ten career losses (132-10).  NCAA finals losses were to M. Schultz, J. Scherr, and D. Chaid.  4x B1G champ.  Not sure that there were other champs for him to run into.  He had seven total losses as a frosh & none of the other AAs were NCAA champs.

I hit on O'Connor by targeting weight classes that had 4-5 timeframes with multiple champs... i.e., the 149-157 brackets during the mid-to-late 2000s.  I also looked at 125-133 during that timeframe (Nickerson, Donahoe, Escobedo, Ness, Coleman Scott, Valenti).

Even more impressive for finding one before the wrestlestat era!

2020 #1 Seed at 133lbs, Sebastian Rivera, lost to Nick Lee, Seth Gross, Nathan Tomasella, Darian Cruz, Spencer Lee, and Nick Suriano.

That would have been six (potentially).

Last year's People's Champion at 197 Nino Bonaccorsi lost to Max Dean, AJ Focus, and Drew Foster.

Ryan Deakin lost to Jason Nolf, Jason Tsirtsis, and Zain Retherford.

Vincenzo Joseph lost to Isaiah Martinez, Mekhi Lewis, and Alex Marine...ever mind.  Just two.

Bernie Truax could be up there if he closes the deal this year.

2020 #1 Seed at 184lbs, Taylor Lujan, had losses to Mark Hall, Zahid Valencia, Trent Hidlay (potential this year if Brooks is/goes down).

2020 #1 Seed at 197, and favorite to win it Kollin Moore, had losses to Bo Nickal, Mike Macchiavello, Anthony Cassar, J'den Cox, and Brett Favre.
