Exciting news!  It will be fun to see Mesenbrink.  The only issue is he is a smaller 165 pounder.  I think Haines might actually be better suited for 165 in terms of frame.

Mesenbrink won a U20 world gold at 163. So he might be okay at 165.

What is the criteria for the Olympic redshirt?  I'm a little surprised Facundo would be eligible.  I thought they used to be pretty liberal in allowing anyone with a remote chance to get one.  I recall guys like Pataky making use of them more out roster management than having a legit shot at the spot.  The last two cycles I thought there was a pretty high bar like needing an age level medal or having made a former senior world team to qualify for one.

No he didn't.

But he is an age level medalist.

He literally won 1st place in the U20 National Freestyle Championship at 74 kg

True freshman Alex Facundo (Essexville, Mich.) led the way by winning the U20 National Freestyle Championship 74 kg title and was named the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler for his efforts.

Right... not U20 Worlds.  U20 age group nationals gets you a handshake and a stop sign, but not an Olympic redshirt.  You are literally wrong.

He gets the Olympic redshirt because of his two cadet bronzes.  Next!
