Observations:

The U. of Texas @ Austin makes lots of money off of football.   It says it doesn't have money for wrestling though.    

Maybe one can argue that Duke University punches above its football weight because it has wrestling which inspires toughness at the school. 

Plenty of other schools in the list used to have wrestling.  

It helps that so many former wrestlers have made it to the NFL, such as Stephen Neal (who didn't even play football at Cal. State Bakersfield).

That’s a shame. The reality is though that these colleges are businesses. If a sports team doesn’t bring them enough income, what’s their incentive to add one? Obviously, they need to provide well-rounded opportunities for students to keep enrollment incentivized, but unfortunately wrestling is probably low on that list too

Is wrestling responsible for the decades of awful performance by Duke Football as well? Or was wrestling simply dormant over the past fifty years from exerting its great effects on the football team?

Texas  HS wrestling has really increased over the years..... U of Texas only has 20 sports...9 mens and 11 women's...... Just two more reasons.

That Duke D looked the real thing last night. Too bad they lost their QB on their last offensive play. Without him they may struggle on O, and fail to show how good they otherwise are. Now for wrestling to follow suit.

If we want wrestling to grow (or even stay the same size) at the NCAA level, the only way is to have more events that people will want to watch live.  That means duals that actually matter.

The current system where 95% of the season is meaningless and the last 5% has a predetermined winner (due to lack of parity) will only lead to more programs dropping the sport. 
 

We tried the complaining approach where we whine about how much money other sports make. We tried complaining about how title IX is unfair to men and electing the “right people” would save the sport. We tried believing the lie about how wrestling teams can help drive enrollment…Sorry that’s all BS.

 

It comes down to creating a product that makes $$$.

I am not positive there is a correlation between football success and wrestling success or vice versa. I believe it's more of athletic success amongst bigger universities. These schools have a bigger draw from crowds and more resources to pump into their athletics which in turn gets the better recruits. I do agree with the notion that wrestling needs to promote itself better to produce more revenue but that is nothing new.

Your point's well taken.  I recall, though, when Duke football was the ACC's co-champion (along with U.Va.) in 1989.   Both had (and still have) wrestling.   Of course, back then, so did Clemson, which placed right behind those two that year.   And Ga. Tech. (which bumped off Clemson that year to keep it from being #1) had only recently dropped wrestling.   Meanwhile Md. and the 3 Carolina programs had wrestling (as they still do).   Duke soon lost its head football coach Steve Spurrier (a former Heisman trophy winnter), though, and the results declined.  It didn't help that Florida State joined the conference, though.   They were hard to beat, placing consistently in the Top 5 nationally.   And yet U.Va. beat 'em in '95 when the Seminoles were ranked #2 or so.   At any rate, over the years Duke has had its peaks & valleys.  Arguably they punch above their weight though.  One could assert that having wrestling around helps lift other sports teams.   Your point's well taken though.   Thank you for sharing that insight.
