Chicago Mayor Sues Kia and Automakers

Since videos posted on social media exposed this defect, thefts of Kia and Hyundai vehicles in Chicago surged from about 500 in the first half of 2022 to more than 8,350 during the second half of the year. Thefts of Kia and Hyundai vehicles continue to comprise more than half of all vehicles stolen in Chicago in 2023.

From the article...

Weird that a mayor would do this, I'm surprised it wouldn't be an insurance company that would do this.

I can't even believe this...he blamed Kia for cars being stolen...that's right...didn't blame the criminals, but rather it is the automakers fault.  Truly bizzarro world out there...yikes!

City of Chicago :: City Of Chicago Files Suit Against Automakers Kia And Hyundai

Come on. Nowhere does it claim thieves are not liable for their crimes. This seems like outrage in search of something to be outraged about.

Mayor Brandon Johnson. “The failure of Kia and Hyundai to install basic auto-theft prevention technology in these models is sheer negligence, and as a result, a citywide and nationwide crime spree around automobile theft has been unfolding right before our eyes.”

Can you show me anywhere he is blaming the actual people stealing the cars?

Again. Come on.

Don't act like you do not know that is a strategic choice. Why would he offer Kia and Hyundai a defense in the charges?

This is a politician being a politician. No different than DeSantis going after Disney or Abbott going after Blackrock.

It is different.  The mayor should be hit with frivolity and ordered to pay the defendant’s legal fees and some form of sanction, forfeiture, or other punishment.

yes, it is different to you. one is a democrat and two are republicans. so dumb.

You are right...it was a "strategic choice"...and I think it is completely asinine and quite frankly backwards and wrong thinking.  Also, I wouldn't compare it to DeSantis and Disney as DeSantis isn't blaming a corporation for crimes committed by criminals who have no relationship with Disney.

I still would like to see where you claim he isn't letting criminals off the hook.  Heck, read the article...or any article on the subject, he rationalizes the criminals behavior...and he doesn't even call them criminals.

Who brought up R or D?  I couldn't care less about that...what he is doing is absolutely stupid and backward thinking.

He didn't say the car companies were the victims...the people who got their cars stolen are the victims!!  You know the ones who should have justice.

If in response to a lawsuit against car companies he asks why he is trying to take money from victims, then yes, he did absolutely say that the car companies are the victims.

I am not saying the facts of the case are the same. I am saying their motivation for bringing the cases are the same. Pure political opportunism. Populist attempts to play to their base.

Oh, I didn't take it that way I guess.  I took it as money was being spent on going after the car makers versus using that money to go after the criminals...aka, to help the victims.  Who knows...guess we will see what he meant if he responds.

Cars don't steal cars, people steal cars.

Is car theft now legal?   Is that the point here?   It sure seems so, because these poor souls just can't survive without stealing cars.   Their lives depend on stealing someone else's property so there is no liability on their part.

Back in the day, horse thieves were hanged.   And nobody cried a tear.

I'm not saying car thieves should be hanged, but they should be punished to the full extent of current law.   Why is Mayor Johnson not looking for the thieves?  Or is he?   He's as progressive as Lightfoot so he is not looking for the thieves.   He does not want to stop the crimes, just shift the blame to those horrible corporations who make it too easy for crimes to be committed.   We have that here in WA as well, mostly Seattle, but over the last two years, cars that were known to be stolen could not be chased by a cop.   Period.  In all of WA.   No chases period.  Now they can chase under limited circumstances.

Where in the article does it state they are not prosecuting the car thieves. I may have missed that part, feel free to point out where that is for me. Thanks buddy.
