Cassar? I think was technically listed as a Junior.

I just looked him up on wrestlestat. They have him listed as a sophomore eligibility-wise the year he won. Red-shirt, two medical red-shirt years, freshman (fourth) year as a non-starter, then sophomore (fifth) year as a champ, then a three match long junior (sixth) year.

I forgot he came back in 2020 and destroyed his shoulder after three matches.

Drowning in data, but thirsting for knowledge

I think PSU listed junior academically. I forgot he wrestled a couple bouts later but listed him as it was (I thought) his last year starting.

He destroyed his shoulder at the us open or trials ( which happened to be in the beginning of the year ) against Dom Bradley who then mocked Caesar while he was hurt , then talked shit and mocked him more after the tournament

I believe Jake Bergeland was a senior last year when he won the starting spot for the first time and AA’d. But he also got a free Covid year and thus competed this year as well.

I liked his chances to come through consolations this years again with his draw.

James English from Penn State (149 lbs 2014 7th place) may be the right answer.  Regardless of whether anyone did so more recently he is the poster boy for the spirit behind the question.  Gutted out a series of brutal injuries, including his neck, finally got his chance, I think as a 6th year senior, was hurt at NCAAs and still almost beat eventual champ Tsirtsis and then placed and beat former champ Maple in the 7th place match.

I believe his points were the difference between 1st and 2nd in the team standings and Cael carried him off the mat.

To me him and Whitmer are bookends for the honor roll of last year starters, both super inspirational.

Not only that - he was so far over when he woke up, he didn't even attempt to weight in formally.  Just forfeited out

I can not imagine going to bed let’s say 7 lbs over and thinking you will drift close to that amount. Nobody must have had a clue what the situation actually was. I know his cut was huge and damn near impossible. He is not a guy I would have expected this happening to. I would have guessed Sparks or McKee
