Blades 8-6. Welker tuned out up 6-4 with seconds remaining and lost.

Blades first period fall. Up 6-0. She was good.

I think the consensus is that she is just better.  Last time when Welker won, Kennedy had tuned her up pretty good a few weeks before, but Kennedy was fresh off being knocked out in the semifinals or something?  She got rocked hella hard against Welker too.

Yeah.  Unfortunately for Shilson she has a history of concussions.  The jury is out that Mortimer did it intentionally or not.  @Mike Parrish, might know better?

Mortimer is still wrestling U20s as well last I looked.

Sorry guys, been out of the loop for a while.

I agree with the refs.
Intentional and flagrant.
DQd out of the tournament.

See also Vayle Baker's headbutt.

@Mike Parrish, I don't think she'll be a problem in a couple if weeks... looks a big heavier than 53 KG...

Best of luck to her.

I want to say that Ronna has always been a quality competitor.
No dirty pool.
No trash talk.
No cattiness.

Pure quality.
Tough opponent.
Sportsmanship.

How do you see 76 KG playing out?

Your projection on seeds as well as H2H matchups between Gray, Blades, Welker, Grote, Guilford, Makoyed, and Bell?

So, seeding is supposedly going to be done differently this year. Again.

https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2023/April/05/Performance-Index-announcement

Here's the top 10 'ranked' women from the article.

Quote

Senior Women's Freestyle PIN standings
1. Adeline Gray, 1,765
2. Helen Maroulis, 1,720
3. Tamyra Mensah-Stock, 1,700
4. Sarah Hildebrandt, 1.668
5. Kayla Miracle, 1,577
6. Jacarra Winchester, 1,522
7. Amit Elor, 1,521
8. Forrest Molinari, 1,480
9. Emily Shilson, 1,475
10. Macey Kilty, 1,460

I'm not sure how this works.
It's opaque.

Grey and Kilty haven't wrestled lately...
How are they in the top 10?
Is it body of work? Over what time period?

Is the seeding committee going to take head to head matches?

What counts for what?

Gray gets the #1 seed, clearly.
After that, who knows?

Quote

76 kg entries (as of April 19)
Alyssa Arana CA California
Precious Bell MN Titan Mercury Wrestling Club (TMWC)
Kennedy Blades IL Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club
Alexa Garcia CA California
Adeline Gray CO New York Athletic Club
Skylar Grote NJ New Jersey
Dymond Guilford CA Titan Mercury Wrestling Club (TMWC)
Tristan Kelly CO Army (WCAP)
Sydnee Kimber AK Bearcat Wrestling Club
Mackenzie Konanz IN Midwest Xtreme Wrestling
Brooke Logan AZ Grindhouse Wrestling Club
Yelena Makoyed CA California
Tiaira Scott KY Kentucky
Kylie Welker WI Hawkeye Women's Wrestling Club

If I were seeding the rest of the field, I'd go

Makoyed
Guilford
Bell

and stop there.

If Gray is back to form, then she wins.

Welker got hurt at women's nationals.
Makoyed v Guilford - take 5 should be good. Coin toss.
Bell is hit and miss.
Kimber might make a run.
Blades is young.

The rest are in the air.

Blades beat Guilford last year didn't she?

At 72s.
We shall see.

Blades v Makoyed might be more interesting.
I've seen Blades try to be physical with Mensah Stock, but doing that with Makoyed might result in a fist fight.

As loaded as this Open is looking... the NLWC entering 5 people, of which none are current wrestlers, has to be the biggest disappointment thus far.

I need Blue Dragons Jr to enter to spice it up for me now.

Nah, we don't need a clown show there.

Yes this is interesting.   NLWC has folks they can send.   Isn't RBY done with college now?   Why isn't he entered?  I'm not sure I buy into the philosophy of keeping the college guys in folkstyle.   It didn't seem to hurt Snyder any.   Perhaps Fix is an example of making the World Team but not winning NCAAs.   I'm not sure that is the case but the case could be made.

Who from PSU has been successful on the international front, really successful?   Taylor and who else?  Maybe Retherford but it took both a long time for both to get there.  The rest of the NLWC associated folks are transplants.  So it can be seen both ways I think.

I believe Casey Cunningham said there are 12 guys entering total, so they be waiting until the last minute to add a few more names of college guys,  perhaps some of them in the U20 category.  Lee and Nolf are in from NLWC.

This is speculation and hearsay (or maybe heresy) but ... I heard rumors of a Starocci injury. Perhaps Brooks is deferring to Taylor ... RBY seems to be "cloud hidden, whereabouts unknown".  Would love to see him at 61KG though.  Not sure about Kerkvilet, but given Steveson and Parris are entered and wrestling, he might have found other things to do this summer.

I could picture Bartlett still throwing his name in the hat since he enjoys freestyle and medaled internationally.  Haines could still go U20.  My guess is that we see a few more guys (e.g., Facundo) added before Monday.

Interesting stuff, thanks for sharing.  RBY seems to be "cloud hidden, whereabouts unknown".   This is really interesting to me.   Maybe he's tired of wrestling, burnt out.   It can happen to anyone.

86 KG now has Valencia then Hall then Brooks then... Plott?  Not much depth there, honestly.  Where is Martin or Foster or Coleman or any of a countless number of 86 KG guys that have been out en masse the last few years?  Only one went up, in Hidlay...?
