Women’s college wrestling

I believe Iowa’s women’s wrestling program will be up and running next season (23-24). Is that right?

If so, what will their season look like? Will there be some sort of year-end tournament? What women’s D1 programs are there?

I think it would be fantastic if there were a women’s finals the same day as the men’s finals.

I think the entire tournament would have to take place in 1 session since there are only 4 D1 women's programs: Iowa, Lock Haven, Sacred Heart and Presbyterian College.  I would be shocked if Iowa's team didn't win everything single championship.

That could be good for the sport. Help it grow. 

I'm a little surprised there aren't more B1G schools in the process of starting a program.

If more D1 programs add women's wrestling, that will be the death of women's D3. The market is currently flooded. Too many programs and not enough girls want to wrestle in college.

If there are only four D1 programs next year a D1 championship seems premature. Do you happen to know if there will be any women’s championships? Maybe like an all-division tournament or something?

Why is it a circus? I’m not familiar with the situation. I’ve read that women’s wrestling is a rapidly growing sport but for all I know the overall numbers remain small.

I don't know, but yeah a 4 team "championship" would not be that exciting --- it probably would be bad for the sport when Iowa wins every single weight.

It is a fast growing sport for sure. There are too many small schools that think adding women's wrestling will reverse the sad financial situation that they are in.  The schools don't have adequate facilities, want to hire 1 coach to cover both programs, or hire a coach and only pay them $40K. I won't even get into the Head Coach that was breast feeding her kid while driving the van home from a tournament or the assistant coach with blue hair that goes to all events with ripped up jeans. That is not a look that I would want for my school if I was the AD. Plus she looked like she fell headfirst into a tackle box. 

How many D1 or B1G schools are standing in line to have a slice of that?

I don't know, I think you could paint a pretty ugly picture of any sport if you kinda cherry picked things like this. A coach involved in covering up athletes selling or trading drugs, prominent athletes accused of sexual assault, fighting. 

The B1G programs do have the facilities and they're not in dire straights financially, and Wrestling is part of their DNA. It'd be like if Women were playing Football, you'd think the SEC would be the program to be out in front there. Maybe Baseball is a better example as Football is pretty big everywhere, but, you get the point.

Most of the women I've seen Wrestling just look like athletes. A coach with dyed hair or a lot of piercings, meh...is that a big deal.

The B1G schools are playing it smart by waiting to see the lower divisions clean up the circus before they enter the ring. 

The lower level schools have a hard enough time finding FS Officials, add more programs to the mix and that problem becomes even worse. When I say having problems, that is not even with 3 man mechanics.

I predict that NCAA will have divisionless championships for the next 5 years as the number of DI schools fills out women's programs.

NAIA will have their own.

JCs are still trying to figure out that women's collegiate wrestling is freestyle.

NAIA already has their own. After an invitational for the last few years, this year was their first official women's wrestling national championship event.

The sport is growing on the women's side and more HS sanctioning is great, but converting those athletes that just learned what a takedown and half-nelson are to Freestyle and collegiate wrestling is proving to be a tougher hurdle than many believed, in my opinion.

I had an awesome first group of girls FSers last spring. 1 is going to continue wrestling in college. The qualification for our HS state folk tournament was considerably more competitive than its first year (last year). That being said, going from "I'm newly learning this." to "I'm gonna commit to doing this in college." is a much bigger gap than universities and colleges understand. It will come. It will be awesome. Until then, it is building.

Middle and elementary school programs need to be built out.
