Annual Fire the Coaches Threads

Visiting the team forums, calling for heads to roll.  Lot's of unrealistic expectations as Tom Brands and John Smith are on the annual hot seat with fans.  Everyone is calling for Taylor, Dake or Burroughs to come save them.  Realistically does any of these coaches go out before they are 60 and who replaces them?  No way Taylor, Dake or Burroughs are even remotely interested until after 2024 Olympics and I don't see Dake or Burroughs going into coaching.  I could see Taylor and he would be a game changer!  Any thoughts?

Tom Ryan just had a great recruiting class, has a finalist, a freshman AA, D'emelio over performed.  They are in 4th.

John Smith on the other hand has not been getting top recruits, 2 AAs this year and Fix got majored after barely losing in 3 finals.  So he seems to be regressing.  They are in 19th place

They look like they recruit based on paper credentials alone. Like they saw Witcraft placed at IronMan were like, "he's good," but never actually looked at how he was winning those matches. Dude didn't have a reliable leg attack then and doesn't have one now. Same thing with Chandler Rogers: his primary scoring technique was an assassin? Same thing with Mastro: he was freakishly tall at 106-120 and used a bundle to horse guys around. That was his offense. Just seems like superficial scouting.

Does the University of Oklahoma still have a D1 team or did they drop to D2 or NAIA?

Does the university of Wyoming still have a DI program? What 2 points, what is going on here? And what is going to change, no assistant coaching staff to draw. Sad day for cowboys

Burroughs is at UPENN and he gets to live where he grew up. Penn also got two recent large financial commitments to their program and are headed in the right direction. Don't see him heading to Iowa.

Wouldn't the next guy at Iowa be an Iowa guy anyway? Same for Oklahoma State?

Is there a realistic coaching change that could elevate Iowa to a championship contending team? I respect the brands but Iowa has been 3rd or 4th most years for the last decade. That's not really cutting it in a lot of fans' eyes.

Feels like something needs to change.

I think they need to start by finding better upper weight coaches; non-Iowa guys for once.

Penn has Burroughs at RTC and Mark Hall in the corner.  Penn went 6-16 on the weekend, with nobody going past consolation round 3.

Stave Garland’s seat should at least be a little toasty. Virginia is terrible. Their “rival” VT is lightyears ahead of them. Since Jack Meuller they haven’t had any wrestler contending at a high level nationally (that I can remember at least).

Garland has less admin support and resources.. and you know very well that UVA is not an “athletics oriented” school like VT…

There only returning AA took a gap year this season

One of Cornell's returning AAs got injured this year and didn't finish the season.  They went from three AAs last year to four AAs this year.  Isn't that "going in the right direction?"

Scott Goodale , Rutgers has regressed a lot recently and currently don’t have any big time recruits to carry the program like Ashnault , Seabass have had the past few seasons and outside of Pritzlof the coaching situation is a joke , he’s the youngest coach on staff and he’s at least 40 , if Goodale doesn’t go then they need to move buxton and pollard to the RTC and get some youth in there to actually wrestle with these guys

That’s a matter of perspective considering Foca , Cardanes, Fernandes and Ramirez and possibly Cornelia were supposed to all be AAs by now and only Foca has jumped to another level, Cardenas got on the podium but hasn’t been great

I’m a fan of and rooting for mike grey , I’ve known for him for almost 20 years now but I can’t help but think other coaches might be able to get more out of those guys

Time for John Smith to retire. Eggum should be gone at MN.

Not a fan of Eggum but he’s done a solid job , lost gable, McKee might have the HEW but still got 2 AAs and another few in the R12 ,unfortunately they couldn’t keep Chittum but I don’t think he deserves the axe

John smith is a little more complicated, he should have a multiple time national champ at 197 and we all know what happened there , his 125 apparently quit to run the family zoo ( not a joke) , his 157 retired from wrestling went up over 200 pounds and was doing roofing like a month before the season , Wittlake got hurt and decided he would rather spend his time hunting and lifting than wrestling .Is some of that on him? Absolutely ,but he’s the GOAT and they have some young talent going forward , Witcraft with a full season at 125 , Fix back for 1 more year , young can finally heal and redshirt , Alvarez stepping in at 141 should AA right away , Voinivich had an ok freshman year but had a solid ncaa tournament, Plott is now a multi time AA and Surber at 197 had a tough draw but has been much much improved , even knocking off elam. Smith also mentioned they intend to step it up with the transfer portal this year bc that’s the direction the sports going ..I could see them getting a team trophy next season

Hmmm. Respect your opinion but hard disagree. Virginia Tech doesn’t really care about anything other than football, other than having a little bit of individual success in track and field here and there. The stereotype they are known for is they could care less what basketball and non revenue sports do. I’m sure they’re fine with wrestling being solid, but wouldn’t care if wrestling wasn’t great. Virginia, on the other hand, heavily invests in non revenue sports. You can start with the baseball team being at the top of the ACC yearly, the 2019 and 2021 men’s lacrosse national championship, the 2021 and 2022 women’s swimming and diving natty, and the 2022 men’s tennis national championship.

So you’re telling me Virginia gives all those non revenue sports ample resources to compete nationally, but tells wrestling to kick rocks? Not sure I can buy into that.

Hayes AAed last year and Aliello was r12 , he had a finalist like 5 6 years ago with DeCamillio and I saw an stat that like 90 something percent of the guys he brings in graduate for Virginia so I think he’s ok for awhile

Ware left them and took Wyomings best wrestler with him pretty late with no time to replace either , mixed with them being a very young this year was just a mess , I’m sure branch will bring someone in and get things moving in the right direction
