RPI-- wrestlestat vs official ranking

Why are there discrepancies between wrestlestat's RPI ranking and the official one released by the NCAA a few days ago? Obviously it changes with each match wrestled but on the day they were released they had a very different order at some weights. Shouldn't they be the same because it is (Win% * 0.25) + (OppWin% * 0.50) + (OppOppWin% * 0.25)? I don't understand what would make them different.

Maybe the guys at WS can explain their calculation? To my knowledge, it only counts bouts against D1 competition (excluding teammates), who are eligible and rostered, at the weight class. So if any single matches are counted incorrectly (either way) it would create a discrepancy.

While we’re on it, it annoys me that wrestlers bonus pct is calculated only on their wins, instead of their total matches. If you’ve lost 3 times, your bonus pct should not be 100%.

I won't be calculating bonus wins that way in my Preview Guide this year. If you're 50-50 on the season and you have 50 pins, your bonus rate is 50%, not 100%.

Are you talking about how the NCAA calculates it?

Wrestlestat does it that way. I don’t know about NCAA. Is bonus rate a seeding criteria? I don’t think so. No one cares about their Most Dominant award/ranking, do they?

Then I have good news for you. Wrestlestat does use total matches in the denominator.

Drowning in data, but thirsting for knowledge

Siebrecht's bonus % on wrestlestat is 38.46%...Are you talking about another ranking system?

If you click into his profile it shows 38.46.  If you click on 157 as a weight class, it shows 50% as bonus in the designated column.  Not sure if it's a matter of timing of data flowing or what

Only man who can clear this up is andegre but he hasn't joined the new forum.  Maybe the legendary @johnstownsteelcan reach out to him on rivals and have him come on over to explain it

The profile shows the bonus with a separate column for bonus %. This is the % of matches.

The individual weight ranks shows the percentage of wins that were by bonus. That is why it is in the same column as the win % and separated by a slash.

Not the clearest way to present the data.

Cheers that makes sense
