The Coaches Have Spoken

Roman Bravo-Young will be lucky to all-american this year. Yianni Diakomihalis will lose in the first round before going on a back side heater. And Greg Kerkvliet will forfeit the title match so as not to contradict.

Based on the latest coaches poll (partial poll?) here is how they see the top 10. PSU still on top but vulnerable.

Discuss Iowa fans.

Thought PSU was skipping the tournament this year.  Pretty sure I read on another thread they've achieve their objective for the year, locked up winning the b10 dual team title and thus will fold up shop after the last dual.  Carl flipping on is with duals do matter.  🤔

It's obvious there is no oversight on this.

Obvious #1s would be Lee, RBY, Johnny D, Robb, O'Toole/Carr, Starocci, Nino, Parris.  A simple glance over to see if any of those are egregiously out would only take a few minutes.

What we know so far is

2 coaches left RBY out of the rankings completely.

One coach ranked Kerk #1, 11 had him at #2, and 2 other coaches didn't have him on the ballot

12 coaches had Yianni #1 while two left him off their ballot.

Which all of these are preposterous.  Kerk is #2.  There isn't an 'at-best' or 'at-worst' sort of scenario with it.

RBY and Johnny D a case could be made for #2 at worst.

Fix over RBY for #1 makes very little sense, however if we base off of the results this year alone and not the fact that over the course of 14+ minutes the prior two seasons he couldn't sniff a takedown then okay - I guess?  Their only common opponent this season is Ragusin.  Fix won via Pin over Ragusin whereas RBY 'only' pulled in a 4-2 Decision.

Gomez as the #1 over Johnny D makes more sense now that Johnson is taking more losses and you aren't doing a three-way round robin.  Johnny D does have a higher bonus rate on top of being the defending champion, though.  Johnny D is 4-1 against the Top 33, whereas Gomez is 5-1 (Using wrestlestat and not including an Injury Default to Thomas here), so that is a wash as well.  Using H2H on the two makes a lot if sense.  Lower that #2 makes zero sense, let alone off the list entirely - for whatever bullshit reason(s).

So we know for sure that all 3 of these guys were not on 2 ballots?  I could see one rogue coach doing it, but not several (since I believe it was confirmed in the other thread that only Zeke had a vote at all 3 of those weights)

edit: just saw WKN's comments about the Socon coaches in another thread...interesting

I think we have at least two possible scenarios.

1. One coach left each guy off and the NCAA threw out the high and low of the 13 remaining votes to get to 11 total votes.

2. Two coaches left each guy off and the NCAA treated one of those two as the low, and threw it out along with the high, leaving 12 total votes (one of which was effectively zero).

The second scenario makes more sense, now that I think about it. Taken to the extreme the first scenario could wind up having someone who was named on only 3 ballots as the top rank as long as at least two of those ballots have him number 1.

I do see now that Nomad was tweeting about 2 coaches leaving those guys off, and saying it was the Socon ones.  He does seem to think it was just a mistake though.

It's a combo of a lot of things.  Kerk had a first place vote at HVWT after losing to Parris.  It's coaches recycling their rankings, not paying attention, and why should they when they already have enough on their plate during the season.  The NCAA should move to create a panel of voters who have the time to pay attention to all the matches across all conferences.

Is AOC undefeated?  Odd that he would get moved to #1 without Robb losing.  Not that I think he isn't worthy of the spot, just weird that he he got it without beating #1 or the #1 guy losing.

Yes.

At the risk of speaking for someone else's work without having a clue why they did what they did...

I would guess it has to do with AOC getting a late start to the season. In his absence Robb was number 1, but now that AOC manhandled Andonian, they moved AOC to the top.

by the way, where are you seeing that? I just checked Intermat, Flo, WIN, Wrestlestat and the coaches and all of them have AOC #2 or #3.
