Oklahoma State's 3x NCAA runner-up Daton Fix (photo courtesy of Sam Janicki; SJanickiPhoto.com)To steal the line from last year's FCW Top-20 Articles, everyone knows 125 Pat Glory, 133 Roman Bravo-Young, 174 Carter Starocci, 184 Aaron Brooks, and 285 Gable Steveson are bonus point monsters, and this season they totaled 283 Fpts. Top names and all NCAA Champions or Finalists (Nick Suriano did not make the Top-20).
But here's five names that totaled 328 Fpts: 125 Caleb Smith (APP), 133 Joshua Koderhandt (NAVY), 174 Logan Messer (GMU), 184 Jonathan Loew (COR), and 285 Ben Goldin (PENN). This group only has one All-American (Loew finishing 8th).
And as I say every year, that's the beauty and frustration of Fantasy Sports. Sometimes your top performers are not "household names."
So, with that, let's take a look at this past season's Top-20 at each weight to help give you an early start to win each week this coming year.
To compile these lists, we used standard WrestleStat Fantasy College Wrestling Data & Scoring. Just a reminder of how points were tallied in WrestleStat leagues:
1) The scoring used was Standard Team Scoring across all competitions (+3 for a win by decision, -4 for a loss by Major, etc)
2) Scoring only counted against D1 competition
3) Wins via Forfeits (FFT) would count as +6 towards a wrestler's point total
4) Wins or Losses by Medical Forfeit (MFF) did not count as + or - towards a wrestler's point total
5) Points were only accumulated during the regular season
Notes:
For the second year in a row, Daton Fix sits as the #1 Fantasy Wrestler at 133 with a PPM of 4.5, powered by five regular-season pins. Unlike last year, where a 133 wrestler did not finish in the Top-33 Overall, Daton Fix was the #16 Overall Fantasy Wrestler in 2022.
National Champ Roman Bravo-Young comes in at #7, which means he has finished in the Top-10 at 133 in each of the last three seasons. Though, this season he fell well below his ADP of 15.21 (was the #54 Fantasy Wrestler Overall). He had the least amount of matches wrestled at 133 to make the Top-20 this season.
At the start of the season, Coach Chandler had noted that Rayvon Foley was possibly going to be at 133. Well, from a Fantasy perspective it worked out stupendously as Foley racked up 75 Fpts and the #2 spot at 133. Foley started off with what would be considered an upset loss to Tony Madrigal, but would go on to only have two losses and a regular season bonus rate of 52%. Although, he did not have a pin all season (regular and post).
True freshman Joshua Koderhandt tied Foley on points, but was 0.2 short on PPM due in large part to his loss by tech against Dylan Ragusin. Koderhandt did beat 4th place finisher Michael McGee by one point and 5th place finisher Lucas Byrd by six Fpts.
Maryland lands two wrestlers on the list, the starter King Sandoval and his backup Jackson Cockrell. Sandoval was 15-13 in the regular season, which at first you wouldn't think would be a record to be in the Top-20 of 224 wrestlers considered. But when you have 13 of those 15 wins being by pin, it's just enough to break that threshold. Cockrell went about it the traditional way, going 21-7 in D1 matches with “technically†no bonus (I consider wins by FFT, DQ, INJ, and MFF as wins by bonus, so I say he had three bonus wins this season). Both Terrapins finished this season with 41 Fpts.
Two Redshirts made the list at 133, Ohio's Alex Gonzales with 48 Fpts and Bucknell's Dylan Chappell with 44. Both Redshirts finished better than All-Americans Austin DeSanto and Devan Turner as well as perennial Fantasy All-Star Codi Russell.
Seven All-Americans made the 2022 Top-20 at 133.
Who Missed The Cut:
The only All-American to not make the Top-20 was Chris Cannon (NW) who finished at #27. He missed the first month of competition, which is one reason why he probably wasn't closer to making the list. That and having a bonus rate of about 20% didn't help.
Drew Mattin (MICH) and Matt Ramos (PUR) fell one point short of the Top-20. Matt Ramos put in an impressive Freshman campaign as the starter, at a weight above where he probably should have been, and made it as a 26th seed to the bloodround.
A regular season record of 13-5 and a bonus rate of about 27% lands Micky Phillippi (PITT) at the #34 spot. The 5 regular season losses Micky had this season are more than he has had in his past three starting seasons (3).
Other notables missing the cut include Joey Oliveri (RUT) at #33 with 32 Fpts, season pin leader contender Anthony Sobotker (BING) at #39 with 30 Fpts, Ramazan Attasauov (ISU) at #44 with 27 Fpts, and Sammy Alvarez (RUT) at #47 with 22 Fpts.
