West Virginia finishes 5-0 at Hoosier Duals

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The West Virginia University wrestling team concluded the Hoosier Duals with a 5-0 mark. The Mountaineers defeated No. 25 Indiana, 22-21, and Northern Colorado, 35-4.

“We wrestled consistently well and with good intensity over these five dual meets,” says coach Craig Turnbull. “We had some good opponents, both in the teams and individuals we matched up against. We were able to rise up to the challenge when needed and came out with five wins. Beating Indiana in their gym was a significant win for us. It was great to see our team rewarded for a great weekend and it is a weekend that we can build on.”

Sophomore Bubba Scheffel (174) led WVU this weekend with five victories, improving his season tally to 19-4. With a pin against the Hoosiers' Nate Jackson and another over Northern Colorado's Josh VanTine, Scheffel eclipsed Scott Collins for the program's single-season pin record (14).

“Anytime you can break a long standing record, it is a nice recognition,” Turnbull says. “He really goes out to find a way to win, and often it happens by putting his opponent in danger. It shows what a tough competitor he his. His intensity has allowed him to be able to break that record.”

Joining Scheffel with five victories this weekend was junior Mike Morales (149), senior Colin Johnston (141) and freshman Cory Stainbrook (125).

Against Indiana (6-1), Stainbrook opened the match with a 14-8 decision over Joe Duca. Stainbrook tallied two takedowns and a three-point nearfall in the win.

After a 3-0 win by decision from senior Nathan Pennesi (133), Johnston tallied his second pin of the weekend, sticking Ethan Raley in 2:01. Morales extended the Mountaineers' lead to 15-0 with a 4-1 decision against Joe Randazzo.

The Hoosiers fought back at 157 pounds, scoring a win by fall with No. 6 Taylor Walsh. Indiana would take the 165-pound bout. Scheffel came back and tied the single-season pin record against Nate Jackson.

Indiana went on to win the three remaining bouts to even the score at 21. WVU earned the win due to the third tiebreaker criteria (points from non-fall bouts). The Mountaineers held a 33-29 advantage in the category.

WVU closed out the weekend with 35-4 final against the Bears (3-5). The Mountaineers jumped out to a 14-0 lead after the first four bouts. Pennesi recorded a technical fall with an 18-0 win over Northern Colorado's Sonny Espinoza.

Scheffel tallied his 14th pin against Josh VanTine in 2:05. The win by fall gave WVU a 23-4 lead that would grow to a 35-4 advantage after a 5-3 decision from freshman Wayne Purnell in the heavyweight bout.

WVU improved its record to 8-2 after this weekend. The Mountaineers travel to Reno, Nev., for the Tournament of Champions on Dec. 22.
