Opening a three-match trip to the state of North Carolina, the Bears (1-0) won nine of the meet's 10 bouts – including six bonus-point wins and the contest's final eight matches – on their way to the victory over the host Wildcats (2-6).
"This was a great start to our trip in North Carolina and to our dual season," Brown head coach Todd Beckerman said. "We had a number of guys contribute today. It was a great all-around effort with some guys winning close matches and others scoring bonus points. We'll enjoy this win before we get ready for NC State and Duke tomorrow."
Viruet (Springfield, Mass.), registered his second pin and team-best 16th win of the year, while Pedro (Methuen, Mass.) and Ziegler (Myersville, Md.) each notched his first fall of the season.
Freshman 149-pounder Jack Bokina (Mattituck, N.Y.), senior 184-pounder CJ LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.), and senior heavyweight Ian Butterbrodt (North Andover, Mass.) all won via major decision. Bokina and LaFragola both recorded major decisions for the third time this year while Butterbrodt charted a major decision for the second time.
Junior 125-pounder Trey Keeley (Washington, Ill.), freshman 141-pounder Colin Realbuto (Somers, N.Y.), and senior 157-pounder Christian LaBrie (Exeter, R.I.) all captured decisions to round out the Bears' scoring.
Opening the match at 125 pounds, Keeley tallied two takedowns in the first period and added points for an escape and riding time in the third period to gain a 6-2 decision.
After Davidson tied the team score at 3-3, Realbuto responded with a 1-0 win at 141 pounds to put Brown back in the lead, 6-3. He notched an escape in the second period and did not allow an escape in the third period to earn the shutout.
Bokina pushed Brown's lead to 10-3 in the team score with an 11-2 major decision at 149 pounds. The rookie held a 5-0 advantage at the end of the second period and outscored his opponent 6-2 in the final frame.
LaBrie earned a 2-1 come-from-behind win at 157 pounds, giving Brown a 13-3 lead in the team score. Trailing 1-0 entering the third period, LaBrie scored an escape and added a point for riding time to take the decision.
Viruet – ranked No. 15 in the nation at 165 pounds according to Intermat – registered the Bears' first fall of the day, notching a pin in the third period at the 6:11 mark and extending Brown's team advantage to 19-3.
At 174 pounds, Pedro made the team score 25-3 with Brown's second consecutive pin, recording the fall in the second period at the 4:33 mark.
LaFragola lengthened the team lead to 29-3 with a 15-5 major decision at 184 pounds. He held leads of 6-2 at the end of the first period and 10-5 at the end of the second period before wrapping up his 10th win of the year with a 5-0 third.
At 197 pounds, Ziegler tallied the Bears' third pin of the day, posting a fall in the third period at the 6:18 mark and making the score 35-3.
Butterbrodt closed the match with a 15-2 major decision at 285 pounds as Brown concluded the dual with five straight bonus-point wins. Butterbrodt jumped out to an 8-0 lead at the end of the first period and maintained a 12-0 advantage through the second stanza.
Next, Brown completes its trip to the state of North Carolina tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 12, with dual meets against No. 12 North Carolina State at 3:00 p.m. (ACC Network Extra) and Duke at 7:00 p.m. (ACC Network Extra).
