In college wrestling, a wrestler can compete as "unattached" to preserve his eligibility status. The Tech athletes choosing this route must find their own transportation and lodging, as well as pay for all meals. On the mat, they can't wear Hokie singlets or have Tech coaches or trainers help them out during the match. Their records also will not count toward their season results and their results will not count toward the team competition at the Open.
After this tournament, most of the team will compete in another open tournament. Tech will travel to Omaha, Neb., for the Kaufman-Brand Open, one of the top open tournaments in the Midwest. That will take place on Nov. 19.
