    Virginia blanks Duke

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The 11th-ranked Virginia wrestling team dominated throughout in a 38-0 dismantling of Duke Sunday afternoon at Memorial Gymnasium. The Cavaliers (11-3, 2-1 ACC) allowed just four offensive points in their 10 victories against the Blue Devils (2-4, 0-2). It also marked the Cavaliers’ first dual shutout since Feb. 12, 2010, also against Duke (40-0).

No. 16 Jedd Moore (R-Sr., Mount Vernon, Ohio), No. 7 Nick Sulzer (R-So., Cleveland, Ohio), Stephen Doty (R-Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) and Zach Nye (R-Fr., Enola, Pa.) each earned bonus points in their wins at 157, 165, 184 and 197 pounds, respectively.

Virginia started out with a 6-0 lead after 20th-ranked Derek Valenti (R-Sr., Newton, N.J.) won by forfeit at 149 pounds. Moore then rolled to a 22-8 win over Immanuel Kerr-Brown at 157, racking up 10 takedowns and 3:20 in riding time as he fell just short of a technical fall.

Sulzer also dominated at 165 in a 23-7 technical fall against Randy Roden. Sulzer sealed the tech fall with 47 seconds left in the second period after piling up nine takedowns as well as three back points.

Ranked 14th nationally at 174 pounds, Jon Fausey (R-Jr., Dalmatia, Pa.) earned a 5-0 win over Trey Adamson to earn his team-leading 25th victory of the year. Fausey recorded a takedown with 16 seconds left in the first period, and after choosing the bottom position to start the second, he reversed Adamson 25 seconds in before riding out the period.

Doty captured a 15-3 major decision over Dylan Ryan at 184 pounds. After taking down Ryan with 1:51 left in the first period and remaining on top for the remainder of the stanza, Doty broke things open in the second with an escape point, followed by a takedown and a three-point near fall.

Nye won by major decision, 11-3, at 197 against Michael Chapman. He clinched the major decision with a takedown with a second left in the final period, coupled with a bonus point for 1:49 of riding time.

Derek Papagianopoulos (R-So., Burlington, Mass.) jumped out fast in his heavyweight match with Brian Self, throwing Self down for a takedown and putting him on his back for a two-point near fall. He built up 1:02 in riding time in a 6-2 decision.

Ranked seventh nationally at 125, Matt Snyder (R-Sr., Lewistown, Pa.) started slow before dominating the final two periods in a 9-2 win over Peter Terrezza. Snyder was taken down in the first period but escaped 15 seconds later. After taking the top position in the second, Snyder twice recorded back points with a two-point near fall followed by a three-point near fall.

The final two matches both went down to the wire. At 133 pounds, 13th-ranked George DiCamillo (Fr., Highland Heights, Ohio) outlasted Brandon Gambucci, 4-3. DiCamillo took Gambucci down with 1:11 left in the first period and maintained the advantage the rest of the period, but was taken down midway through the second before escaping with 20 seconds remaining. DiCamillo started the third on top and built his riding time to 1:16 before Gambucci escaped to tie the bout at three; the riding time point proved to be the difference though as DiCamillo won, 4-3.

At 141 pounds Jimmy Nehls (R-Fr., Downers Grove, Ill.) scored a takedown with 18 seconds in the third to break a 1-1 tie and pick up a 3-2 win in a defensive struggle against 2012 NCAA qualifer Tanner Hough.

Virginia has a week off before wrestling NC State at home at 1 p.m. next Sunday (Jan. 27).
