The Pride captured nine of the 10 matches on the day, including the first eight matches in the contest, to lead 31-0 following the 184-pound match. Hofstra junior Steve Bonanno opened the match at 125 pounds with his fifth tech fall victory of the year, downing senior Desmond Moore, 19-3 in 5:11. Bonanno, who is ranked 13th in the nation by InterMat, is now 15-5 on the season. Pride red-shirt sophomore Jamie Franco gave Hofstra an 8-0 lead in the contest at 133 pounds with an 11-9 come-from-behind victory on a late takedown and two-point near-fall over senior Evan Yenolevich. Franco improved to 11-7 in 2011-12.
Vaith snapped a two-match losing skid in fine fashion with a pin of senior Leonard Drummond in 1:28 at 141 pounds. Vaith improves to 10-6 on the year with his first fall victory of his career. Junior Justin Accordino rolled to a 10-2 major decision over freshman Jackson Stabile at 149 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Accordino opened up a 5-1 lead after two periods on the way to his 12th win of the season. Junior Tyler Banks ended a three-match slide with a 2-0 overtime decision over red-shirt freshman Bo Candelaria on a takedown 37 seconds into the extra period. Banks evened his record at 6-6.
Senior P.J. Gillespie, ranked 19th by InterMat, also snapped a two-match slide with a 6-3 win over junior Micah Bollinger at 165 pounds. Gillespie is now 16-4 on the season. Pride freshman Jermaine John won his second consecutive match with an 8-2 decision over red-shirt junior Ricky Pena at 174 pounds to boost the Pride lead to 27-0. John is now 5-8 this season. Senior Ben Clymer, ranked 12th in the nation, won his eight match in the last nine outings with a 12-3 major decision over junior Giovanni Ortiz at 184 pounds. After leading 4-0 after two periods, Clymer turned it up in the third period to improve to 16-5 on the year.
Kutztown recorded its only win in the match at 197 pounds when junior Vinny Campanile defeated sophomore Tim Murphy, 9-2. After a scoreless first period, Campanile posted two three-point near-falls in the second period on the way to victory. Murphy is now 9-11 on the season. But junior Paul Snyder closed out the match with a Hofstra victory, blanking freshman Brandan Clark, 8-0 at 285 pounds. Snyder is now 11-6 on the year.
Sunday's match started a busy week for the Pride that will see Hofstra wrestle five times in seven days. The Pride return to action on Thursday, January 19 when they travel to American University in Washington, D.C. for a 7 p.m. match. On Saturday, January 21, Hofstra will face Old Dominion, George Mason and Boston University in the CAA Duals at George Mason University beginning at noon.
