    UW-Whitewater tops UW-Oshkosh

    UW-Whitewater, ranked fourteenth in the Division III poll conducted by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, defeated twentieth ranked UW-Oshkosh 33-11 in Williams Center in Whitewater Friday night.

    Zac Denny (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) began the opening match at 125 with a takedown of Scott Worlund from the opening position. Denny added an escape, followed by a takedown in the first :30 of the second period for a 5-0 lead. Worlund escaped to get on the board, 5-1. Denny and Worlund exhanged a takedown and an escape in the second, and Denny added a three point nearfall for a 12-2 lead after two periods. They exchanged points early in the third to stand at 14-4, and the points rolled up on the scoreboard to a 21-6 win, point for riding time, and a 5-0 lead for Whitewater with the technical fall at 7:00.

    Whitewater's Trevor Pruett (West Bend/West Bend East) scored first, registered a score first, a takedown at 1:45 in the first period of the 133 pound match. Pruett caught Oshkosh's Craig Mason in the first period, registering a pin at 2:27 to put UW-W in front 11-0.

    Corey Meyer (Cary, IL/Cary-Grove) of Whitewater earned a takedown of Hunter Mulock at the one minute mark of the first period in the 141 pounds match for a 2-0 lead in the 141 class. Thirty seconds into the second period he made it 4-0 with a reversal. Twenty-five seconds into the third Pruett got two more on a takedown, then at 1:25 Sinda got on the board with an escape, quickly followed by another Pruett takedown to make it 8-1. Riding time made the final 9-1. After three matches the Warhawks led 15-0.

    In the 149 pound match Whitewater's Matt Adcock (Bloomingdale, IL/Lake Park) got on the scoreboard first with a takedown forty-six seconds into the match. Jerome Scott escaped to make it 2-1, where it ended after one. A second period escape by Scott knotted the match at 2-2. Adcock went ahead 4-2 with another takedown at 5:28. He added another with a minute left for a 6-2 lead, Scott escaped to make it 6-3, and they did the same thing again for an 8-4 Adcock lead, which became 9-4 with riding tiime. In the team score Whitewater led 18-0.

    Whitewater's Tom Gerszewski (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake South) and the Titans' Thomas Dahlke wrestling to a 0-0 draw in the first period at 157 pounds. In period two Gerszewski escaped from the down position for the first score of the match and the only point of the second. Dahlke escaped from down to start the third to tie the score 1-1. At 5:42 Gerszewski came around Dahlke for a takedown and 3-1 lead. The decision made it 21-0 Whitewater.

    Oshkosh's Nazar Kulchytskyy, ranked #1 at 165 pounds in Division III by the NWCA, started quickly with a takedown of Kegan Arthur (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey), Arthur escaped, and that patten repeated, then another Kulchytskyy earned another takedown, and Arthur another escape, then another UW-O takedown for an 8-3 lead by Kulchytskyy after one period. At 3:28 it went takedown, escape again to set the score at 10-4. By the end of the second it was 16-5 Kulchytskyy. Kulchytskyy stepped out of the down position for one point in the third, then made it 19-5 with a takedown. The match ended 21-6 with a technical fall at 6:01. The tech fall made the team score Whitewater 21, Oshkosh 5.

    Dan Schiferl, #2 at 174 pounds in the NWCA ranking, got on the board first with a takedown at 2:54. Whitewater's T.J. Decker got on the board with an escape with one second left in the first. Schiferl made it 3-1 with an escape from the down position at the start of the second. Schiferl earned a pin at 4:39, and Oshkosh narrowed the gap, now at 21-11 Whitewater.

    At 184 pounds Whitewater's Andrew Pettit (Hoffman Estates, IL/Hoffman Estates) jumped out to a 5-1 lead that included a three point nearfall in the first period. UW-O's Korey Kleinhans fought back to 6-4, and the second period ended with both wrestlers on the verge of points. Pettit fought back to a 9-4 lead, inched to 11-4 with a reversal with twenty seconds left. Pettit added a point for riding time for a 12-4 win, and the decision made it 25-11 Whitewater.

    Whitewater's Shane Siefert (Mundelein, IL/Carmel), #1 at 197 according to the NWCA, used a number of moves to roll up points in his bout with Tom Dahlke, which ended at 5:27 by technical fall, 17-1. Whitewater was in front in the team score 30-11.

    Anthony Edgren (New Lisbon/New Lisbon) of Whitewater, #2 at 285 pounds according to the NWCA, got a takedown and three point nearfall in the first two minutes of his match with Brandon Clapper. Clapper escaped from down to start the third to make it 6-1. Edgren added a takedown in the last seconds of the match and riding time for a 11-1 major decision and making the final score 33-11 in favor of Whitewater.

    The Warhawks are 6-2 in dual meets, 4-0 against Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition. Oshkosh is 1-1 overall and in the WIAC.

    UW-W will compete in the National Duals in Des Moines, Iowa January 11-12. The next time the Warhawks will be in action at home will be January 23 at 7:00 when UW-La Crosse visits Williams Center.
