    Upper Iowa picks up win over MSU Moorhead

    Upper Iowa capped off Salute to Service Night in Dorman Gym with a Northern Sun Conference victory. The No. 10 Peacocks defeated the Dragons of Minnesota State University Moorhead 30-6 thanks to eight wins on the evening. UIU posted four bonus-point wins including a pair of tech falls and two majors. The win moved UIU's record to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in the NSIC, while MSUM is now 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

    The dual began at 157 pounds and redshirt freshman Mac Spotts got the home team rolling with a 14-4 major decision over Nicholas Erbes. Spotts posted a takedown, reversal and four nearfall points in the first period to claim an early 8-3 lead. A takedown in the second and two more nearfall points in the third preceded a ride time point to set the final margin at ten, 14-4.

    The Dragons got one of their two wins in the 165 pound match when Weston Dobler outlasted Tucker Black with a takedown in the first sudden victory period to win 5-3.

    Jordan Gundrum trailed 4-0 early to No. 8 Adam Blees of MSUM, but tied the bout 4-4 heading to the second period thanks to a reversal and two nearfall points. A second reversal and four nearfall points in the second period pushed the lead to 10-4 and a final takedown in the third gave Gundrum the upset 12-6.

    Leading 7-3, freshman Dalton Hahn took the mat for the 184 pound match. Hahn controlled the match for a 6-0 win thanks to two takedowns, an escape and a ride time point.

    Nick Baumler kept the momentum going with a dominant 14-4 major decision highlighted by 5 takedowns and a reversal after starting the second period in the bottom position. The win pushed UIU's lead to 14-3 midway through the dual.

    In the heavyweight bout, Jordan Magnuson toed the line against No. 2 Logan Hopp. Hopp got an early takedown and added an escape in the second period. After an early escape in the third period, Magnuson only trailed by a point, 3-2, but one last takedown for Hopp secured the decision 5-3.

    The 125-pound match was one of the more entertaining contests which featured No. 5 Maleek Williams against Cole Jones. The two lightweights came out with a furious pace to score nine points apiece in the opening period. Williams converted a pair of takedowns around an escape and added a reversal and two nearfall points, while Jones scored on an escape, a takedown, a reversal and four nearfall points. Williams was able to control the second and third periods with a pair of takedowns and two nearfall points to claim a 16-10 decision.

    With a 20-3 lead, No. 5 Josh Walker dominated his match at 133 pounds over Seth Hutchison. Walker posted a takedown and four nearfall points in the first period and added a reversal to begin the second period and then notched a pair of four-point nearfalls to end the match early (3:42) with a 16-0 tech fall.

    Zach Scott picked up the Dragons' second win of the dual with a 10-6 decision over Hunter Slifka. Scott took an early 7-2 lead in the first period thanks to an early takedown and four nearfall points. Slifka rallied with the only points in the second period on an escape and a takedown to pull within two, 7-5. In the end, a final takedown by Scott pushed the margin out of reach.

    Damian Penichet put the exclamation point on the dual in the final bout at 149 pounds. Penichet grabbed a 16-0 tech fall (3:22) over Riley Byklum with a takedown and a pair of four-point nearfalls in the first period and a takedown and four nearfall points in the second to end the match and dual.

    Upper Iowa held three big advantages over MSU Moorhead during the dual including; 19-8 in takedowns, 12-3 in nearfalls and 8-1 in reversals.

    The Peacocks will host the No. 20 Mavericks of Minnesota State University, Mankato next Friday night, Jan. 19 in Dorman Gym at 7 p.m.
