The Panthers won six of the ten matches with wins from Caleb Flores (125 lbs.), Joey Lazor (141 lbs.), Brett Robbins (149 lbs.), David Bonin (157 lbs.), Andy OLoughlin (197 lbs.) and Christian Brantley (285 lbs.).
Flores started the match with a 5-3 upset over Wyoming’s No. 15-ranked Michael Martinez. Flores scored a pair of takedowns in the first and second periods and an escape late in the third period to secure the 5-3 win.
Wyoming’s Tyler Cox knotted the team score at 3-3 with a 5-4 decision at 133 pounds. UNI answered in the next bout as Lazor scored a reversal and a takedown while building over a minute of riding time to score a 5-3 decision over Chase Smith at 141 pounds.
Robbins scored the Panthers second upset win at 149 pounds, securing a 6-3 decision over No. 17-ranked Cole Dallaserra. With the match tied 2-2 heading into the third period, Robbins scored a reversal to take a 4-2 lead. Dallaserra escaped, tightening the gap to 4-3, but Robbins scored a takedown with ten seconds remaining to earn the 6-3 win.
The Panthers built their lead to 12-3 after No. 19-ranked David Bonin escaped with three seconds remaining to earn an 8-7 win over Jimmy Belleville at 157 pounds. Bonin led 6-5 heading in the third period, but Belleville scored a reversal with 16 seconds left in the bout. Bonin’s escape with three seconds remaining as well as over a minute of riding time gave him the 8-7 decision.
Wyoming would win the next three matches to take a 13-12 lead with two matches remaining. No. 5-ranked Joe LeBlanc just edged UNI’s No. 7-ranked Ryan Loder, scoring an escape with 17 seconds left to earn the 6-5 win at 184 pounds.
OLoughlin gave the Panthers the lead for good, scoring a 10-2 major decision over Wyoming’s LJ Helbig. The senior opened the bout with a takedown and a three-point near fall to go up 5-0 after the first period. After a scoreless second period, OLoughlin scored a pair of reversals and picked up a riding time point to earn the major decision win.
Christian Brantley preserved the Panther victory with a 2-1 decision over Matthew McLaughlin at the heavyweight slot. McLaughlin scored an escape in the second period, but Brantley countered with an escape of his own and earned the victory with on riding time criteria.
UNI (12-9, 5-0 WWC) will have a week off before heading to Colorado Springs, Colo. for the West Regional Championships on March 6.
NOTES:
UNI honored eight seniors following the match including Jarion Beets, Caleb Flores, Trevor Kittleson, Brent Lambie, Nick Pickerell, Brett Robbins, Andy OLoughlin and Terrance Young.
UNI’s last win over a ranked opponent came during the National Duals, scoring a 20-19 win over No. 24 Ohio State.
