UC Davis takes down Utah Valley State

OREM, Utah -- Fourth-ranked Ken Cook earned a victory by fall at 174 pounds, and Dustin Noack, Eliot Kelly and Broc Maffia all earned major decisions in their respective weight classes to lead the UC Davis wrestling team to a 36-12 victory over Utah Valley State in a non conference match at the Shurian Family Activity Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Aggies are now 8-6 in duals this season while the Wolverines fall to 6-11.

Cook earned his team-leading fifth fall of the season in timely fashion as he pinned Marc Fenwick in 1:07. The victory was also Cook's 20th overall this season.

Noack continued his hot streak at 165 as he earned a 16-4 major decision over Dustin Olsen to run his record to 17-7 this season.

Kelly continues to lead the team in overall victories as his fourth major decision of the season gives him 22.

Broc Maffia rebounded from a tough bout last night to earn a 14-5 major decision at heavyweight over Eric McAllister.

The Wolverine's only victories in the match came off a forfeit at 157 and an injury default at 184.

UC Davis opened the match with decisions by Shawn Brendle at 141 and Shawn Haratani at 149. Brendle's decision was his first victory of the season while Haratani has now claimed 13.

With a forfeit at 157, the Wolverines tied the score at 6-6 heading into the 165 bout. Noack's major decision at 165 and Cook's pin at 174 would run the Aggie lead back up to 19-6.

Tyler Bernacchi was leading in his bout at 184, but had to default after suffering an injury in the second period.

Major decisions at 197 and 285, followed by forfeit wins by Marcos Orozco at 125 and Omar Gaitan at 133 sealed the Aggies' 36-12 victory.

UC Davis will return home for the final time this season as they welcome Pac-10 foe Cal Poly to Hickey Gymnasium on Thursday night. The match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and will feature a ceremony for the Aggie seniors.
