    Two Pittsburgh wrestlers win titles at Washington & Jefferson Open

    WASHINGTON, Pa. -— Several members of the Pitt wrestling team traveled to nearby Washington & Jefferson College for the W&J Open Invitational. Pitt's Sean Richmond and Zach Sheaffer won in their weight classes while Matt Darnell and A.J. Hunte also placed.

    At 157 pounds, Richmond (Emmaus, Pa./Easton) went 4-0. He won a 3-2 decision over Mount Union's George Comer. He then defeated Mike Wiseman of Mercyhurst Northeast with a 7-4 decision. Richmond won his last two bouts, 5-3, over Joe Strittmatter and Mazen Kholi, both of Pitt-Johnstown.

    Sheaffer (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) finished 5-0 en route to a first-place finish at 285 pounds. He won his first two matches with 11-2 major decisions over Tim Katzaman of Elizabethtown and Marc Berry of Theil. Sheaffer then went on to defeat Pitt-Johnstown's Nathan Tomporski with a 4-2 decision. He won his fourth bout by pinning Pitt-Johnstown's Chris Dempsey at the 1:35 mark. Sheaffer won the final bout with a 6-4 decision over Kyle Brown of Theil.

    In his first collegiate tournament, Hunte (Brookline, Mass./Brookline) finished in second at 197 pounds with a 3-1 record. He won his first match with a fall over Theil's Jared McClure at the 0:57 mark. In the second bout, he pinned W&J's Dylan Mercer at the 3:00 mark. Hunte then won a 3-1 decision over Tim Frank of Duquesne before falling in a 14-2 major decision to Mike Fowler of Pitt-Johnstown.

    Darnell (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley C.A.) placed third at 184 pounds after finishing 2-2. He won his first match with a 1-0 decision over Duquesne's Scott Black. Darnell lost his second match by a 6-2 decision to Nathan Murin of Pitt-Johnstown. He won his third bout with a decision over Nick Allerding of Mount Union and lost the final match by an 11-0 major decision over Jared Ricotta of Duquesne.

    Also competing was freshman Brock Mantella (Alpharetta, Ga./Alpharetta) who finished 2-1. Mantella won a 9-2 decision over Jacob Benczo of Waynesburg. He then won a 2-0 decision over Elizabethtown's Paul Connor but was pinned by Pitt-Johnstown's Kyle Keane in his final bout.

    The Pitt wrestling team opens its 2006-07 season next week at Rider. They'll face the Broncs on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.
