The Citadel goes 2-0, Turtogtokh breaks wins record

Charleston, S.C. -- Turtogtokh Luvsandorj notched his 125th and 126th career wins to become The Citadel wrestling team's all-time winningest wrestler on Sunday as the Bulldogs beat North Carolina 19-18 and Duke 26-11 on Senior Day at McAlister Field House.

The Bulldogs improved to 9-3 on the season and return to conference action with a 4-1 SoCon mark when they head to Chapel Hill, N.C., to take on Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Feb. 22 at noon. A make-up date for the postponed Campbell dual originally scheduled for Feb. 13 is expected to be announced within the next few days.

In his final collegiate match at McAlister Field House, Luvsandorj notched an 8-1 win over Duke's Marcus Cain which sealed the Bulldogs' ninth-straight win over the Blue Devils dating back to 2003. It was the redshirt senior's 126th career win moving him past former teammate Odie Delaney (2013) and Sean Markey (2006) in the record book.

Luvsandorj tied the record earlier in a thrilling 4-2 sudden victory win over North Carolina's John Michael Staudenmayer. The victory gave the Bulldogs a 16-14 advantage with two bouts remaining.

The Mongolia native improved to 31-5 on the season at 165 pounds with a 12-0 dual record and extended his winning streak to 14.

"It's been a great run and a great five years for Turtogtokh, and I know he is proud to be a Citadel wrestler and represent us in a positive manner," said Coach Rob Hjerling. "We are looking forward to adding to the record and having a great run at the end of his career."

Ugi Khishignyam, who is also in his final season as a Bulldog, captured two wins on the day, earning a 19-7 major decision over UNC's Brian Bokoski before cruising past Duke's Xaviel Ramos by a 21-5 technical fall at 5:21.

The 141-pounder closed out his career with a perfect 9-0 record at McAlister Field House and improved his season mark to 17-3 and career to 59-9.

Matt Frisch and Aaron Walker continued their successes at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively with two wins each.

Frisch notched a hard-fought 5-2 decision over Tar Heel grappler Christian Barber in the day's opening match before a 5-3 win over Duke's Connor Bass in his second.

Walker, who is 12-0 in dual action this season, gained two more victories to extend his winning streak to 13, topping UNC's Jake Crawford 8-3 before an impressive 10-6 win over Immanuel Kerr-Brown.

Seniors Jack Duane and Kenneth Radford also picked up one win apiece on Sunday. Radford gave the Bulldogs a 19-14 lead after a 6-4 decision over UNC's Scott Marmoll in the first match while Duane closed out The Citadel's 26-11 win with a 9-7 decision against Duke's Jake Kasper.
