    The Citadel defeats Presbyterian, Bellarmine

    LOUISVILLIE, Ky. -- The Citadel wrestling team picked up a pair of Southern Conference victories Sunday. The Bulldogs started the morning with a 32-10 victory over Presbyterian and followed it up with a 27-18 victory over Bellarmine.

    The Bulldogs improve to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in SoCon action. The Citadel is off to its best conference start since opening the 2014-15 season winning two of the first three matches. The three conference victories are the most since posting five wins during the 2014-15 season.

    How it Happened
  • Jake Rotunda got the Bulldogs on the board with an 11-4 decision at 133 pounds. After the match was tied 3-3 after the first period, Rotunda received three points from cautions in the second period. He added two more points for a near fall just as the second period expired.
  • Selwyn Porter continued his undefeated season with a methodical 7-0 victory at 149 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Porter quickly got an escape and a takedown to start the second period.
  • The third period would start with a point for Porter after the second stall warning. Porter then got the escape and the takedown for the victory.
  • Ethan Willis continued the momentum at 165 pounds as he quickly got a takedown and the near fall to jump out to a 6-0 lead. He extended the lead to 8-0 in the second period and survived a third-period fall attempt for the 8-2 win.
  • Cole Burke was impressive at 174 pounds as he secured six takedowns and a pair of near falls in a 21-3 tech fall victory.
  • Burke finished the match with a fury as he got four takedowns in the third period and ended the match with a near fall.
  • The Bulldogs secured the victory with forfeit victories from Kyle Kretzer (174) and Ben Stemmet (184).
  • Michael McAleavey put a stamp on the victory with a first-period fall. After he secured a near fall early, McAleavey was able to secure the fall with just 12 seconds remaining in the first period.

    How It Happened
  • Jordie White was locked in a high-scoring match to get things started. After surviving a near fall late in the first period, White seized control of the match in the second period and was able to secure pin with just over a minute remaining in the period.
  • Jake Rotunda continued the momentum in the next match as he utilized several early takedowns and controlled the match on the ground for the 11-3 major decision victory.
  • Selwyn Porter helped to extend the Bulldog advantage with a major decision victory. Porter got a near fall late in the second period, then used three third-period takedowns to secure the four points.
  • Bellarmine used back-to-back falls to take a 15-14 advantage just past the halfway point of the match.
  • The Bulldogs looked to have a victory at 174 pounds after Cole Burke secured a takedown in the final 30 seconds. After the final buzzer, the alternate official called a locked hands foul, awarding a point to BU and sending the match into overtime. After a wild scramble, Burke came out on the wrong side of the takedown.
  • The Citadel entered the final three matches trailing 18-14. Kyle Kretzer erased that deficit with a 12-4 major decision victory. Kretzer used seven takedowns throughout the match to get the four big points.
  • Ben Stemmet gave the Bulldogs the lead with a 7-2 victory at 197 pounds. Stemmet controlled the match on the mat and did not allow his opponent to get any momentum.
  • Michael McAleavey wasted no time in ending his match as he only needed 39 seconds to secure the fall. He shot in right away and put his opponent on his back. He quickly worked his way into position to end the match.

    The Bulldogs will host a pair of Southern Conference matches inside McAlister Field House on Jan. 30. The Citadel will face Campbell at 3 p.m. and Davidson at 7 p.m.
