The Mocs defeated the Patriots 26-11 and beat their Southern Conference rival, the Mountaineers, 29-5. Appalachian State, 8-7-1 and 1-3 in the SoCon, closed out the evening with a 26-22 win over the Cumberlands, now 6-3.
The Mocs, 13-7-1 overall and 2-0 in the SoCon, won seven of 10 matches against the Mountaineers. After an ASU forfeit at 125 to start the dual, UTC's Matt Keller won his 12th consecutive match with a 6-3 decision over Terreyl Williams at 133.
A 23-7 Keefe technical fall over Marcus Cox gave UTC an early 14-0 advantage. Eric Burns got ASU on the scoreboard with a 6-3 win over Aaron Martin at 149. Yost won his second match of the day, defeating Scott Ervin 6-3 at 157.
Lee Roper's 5-4 win over Justin Otis in the 165-pound match ended the Mountaineers' scoring as the Mocs closed out the dual with consecutive wins by T.J. Sayers (174), John Davis (184), Lloyd Rogers (197) and Silva (285).
"We went out to try to improve upon what we did in the last match with Appalachian," UTC Head Coach Joe Seay said. "We wrestled well tonight, and we won some close matches. I have told our guys that we have to win the close matches. That is what could be the difference in going to the NCAAs or not. Several of the matches could have gone either way."
UTC and ASU tied 21-21 in a non-conference match on Nov. 13 at the Mat Jam Duals in Boone, N.C.
Yost scored a 9-1 major decision over The Cumberlands' Thomas Hutchinson at 157 pounds to clinch the earlier victory for the Mocs. His win pushed UTC's margin to 14-3 and proved to be too much for the Patriots to overcome.
After Delrico Choates edged UTC's Javier Maldonado 5-4 on a riding-time point in the first match of the night at 125 pounds, the Mocs reeled off five straight victories for a 17-3 lead. The string included wins by Adam Rains (133), Keefe (141), Martin (149), Yost and Daniel Peterson (165).
Kyle McKee pinned Edward Hernandez in the 184-pound match, and Silva earned a 3-1 overtime victory over Matt Bishop at 285.
UTC returns to SoCon competition next weekend, traveling to VMI Friday and to Davidson Saturday.
