Stevens tops TCNJ for third straight victory

EWING, N.J. -- In a top- 30 battle between the Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling squad and No. 14 The College of New Jersey, Stevens, ranked 17th in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III preseason poll, came away with a 26-16 victory on the road. The Ducks trailed the dual match, 6-0, but after a flagrant misconduct in the 141-pound weight class, Stevens took a 6-5 lead and never looked back.

Freshman Conner Bass (Westhampton, N.Y.) picked up six points at 141 by way of the flagrant misconduct against John Palsi to turn around the match for the Ducks.

After that bout, Stevens outscored the Lions, 20-10 over the final seven duals.

At 149, sophomore CJ Caserta (Mt. Arlington, N.J.) pinned Chris Lombardi in exactly two minutes to pick up his second win of the season.

Juniors Joey Favia (Brick, N.J.) and Ryan Dormann (Mickleton, N.J.) both ran their dual records to 3-0 this season with major decisions victories in back-to-back bouts to increase the Ducks' lead from 12-9 to 20-9. Favia topped KC Murphy, 13-4, at 165, while Dormann took 174 against Justin DeAndrea, 18-4.

In heavyweight class, freshman Tyler Maher (Raleigh, N.C.) took down Trevor Salvatore in 7:00 to lock up the match for Stevens.

The Ducks avenged a 30-9 setback from last season to TCNJ to earn their third consecutive victory of the 2011-12 season. Stevens had lost its last three matches to the Lions dating back to 2007.

Stevens will travel to Bristol, R.I. on November 12 to compete in the Roger Williams Invitational. The Ducks host Yeshiva University on the 16th at 7 p.m. in their next home dual.
