Stanford picks up 40-7 win on Senior Day

Stanford, Calif. -- Stanford closed out the 2006 home dual season with a 40-7 victory over Portland State this afternoon at Burnham Pavilion. With the win, the Cardinal improves to 7-5 with a 4-2 mark in the Pac-10, while the Vikings fall to 2-15 overall and 0-6 in the conference.

Tenth-ranked Tanner Gardner set the pace of the meet with a 16-1 technical fall at 5:20 over Portland State's Bricen Yakabe. True freshman Eric Minnick was up next at 133 pounds and he took a 4-0 lead on a takedown and nearfall before a knee injury forced Kip Watson to medical default with just 16 seconds left in the first period.

Cardinal senior Juston Johnson won his last match at Burnham Pavilion by forfeit, as Stanford took a 17-0 lead.

At 149 pounds, sophomore Josh Zupancic won his 19th match of the year as notched a technical fall at 7:00, as he scored a double leg takedown, earned a two-point nearfall and picked up the riding time point as time expired.

Fifth-year senior Zack Hensley stepped into the lineup at 157 pounds for his first match of the year and last of his collegiate career. Trailing 6-1 to start the third period, Hensley selected the top position and tilts Kainoa Casco to his back three times and earns the riding time point to post the 11-6 decision. Miguel Matta took over the starting spot at 165 pounds, but could not score his first dual victory of the year, dropping the major to Portland State's Chris Feist.

At 174 pounds, Feist's younger brother Luke Feist started for the Cardinal and took advantage of Kalivas Karras's choice to start down in the second period, tilting him to his back for the pin at 4:56. Senior Brennan Corbett made his second start at 184 pounds (he started the year at 165, but moved up to 174 earlier this season and is filling in for senior co-captain Ryan Hagen at 184 pounds). After a scoreless first period, Corbett started down in the second period and got a quick escape for the 1-0 lead over Sean Murphy. Corbett got Murphy in a front headlock and turned him to his back and pinned him at 4:47 to put the Cardinal on top of the Vikings, 37-4.

Portland State got their second win of the day at 197, with Jake Schneider scoring the winning takedown late in the third period over Stanford senior Larry Ozowara. At heavyweight, sophomore Phillip Doerner wrestled in his first collegiate dual and posted an 11-7 decision over Joey Nobriga.

The Cardinal will close out the regular season with three road duals before hosting the Pac-10 Championships, Feb. 26-27 at Maples Pavilion. Stanford will be at Cal Poly next Friday, Feb. 10, at Arizona State on Sunday, Feb. 12, and at Fresno State on Wednesday, Feb. 15.
