St. Cloud State defeats Upper Iowa

St. Cloud, Minn.-– No. 11 St Cloud State (12-1, 1-1 NCC) recorded its second dual victory over a higher ranked opponent as the Huskies used an upset win from John Sundgren (Blaine) at 157 pounds and victories at seven of 10 weight classes to defeat No. 9 Upper Iowa (6-5, 2-0 NSIC) by a tally of 27-12 on Feb. 10, at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud, Minn.

The biggest match for the Huskies came at 157 pounds. Sundgren kept his match with the fourth-ranked wrestler in the country in Travis Eggers close throughout. After Sundgren led 3-2 after the first, Eggers took a 5-3 lead after two periods. With Eggers holding a 6-5 lead and under 40 seconds remaining in the match, Sundgren wrapped up an off-balance Eggers and recorded the pin with 25 seconds remaining for the biggest win of his college career.

"I knew I had to score late, and when I felt the opportunity I went for it and got the fall," said Sundgren. "It was big for the regional rankings, and now I'm looking forward to taking on the number one guy (Minnesota State-Mankato's Jason Rhoten) in a couple weeks."

Brad Padgett (Buckley, Wash.) clinched the dual for SCSU at 184 pounds, as he won a 9-7 overtime decision over Tony Gehling. Padgett rallied from behind in the third period and recorded the match-winning takedown 10 seconds into the extra period for his 26th win of the season.

Upper Iowa took the early 3-0 lead in the dual, as second-ranked Tyler Mumbolo recorded a 7-0 decision over Westy Hanson (Crookston) at 125 pounds.

St. Cloud quickly came back to tie at 133 pounds via an exciting 8-6 Josh Williams (Banks, Ore.) decision over Jacob Pederson.

With Williams leading the match 6-4, Pederson managed a reversal with 30 seconds left to tie the match. Pederson allowed a Williams escape with 15 seconds because of the SCSU riding time advantage, but could not convert on a last-second takedown effort giving the Huskies the win.

At 141, Gabe Suarez (Las Vegas, Nev.) continued his winning ways, as he used seven takedowns and a pair of near-falls, to take a 22-8 major decision over Layne Greedy. Suarez remains an undefeated 13-0 in duals and has now won 10 straight matches. Chad Kubasch (New Germany) followed Suarez's victory with a 10-5 decision of his own to extend the Husky lead to 10-3.

Sean Washington tried to regain momentum for the Peacocks after Sundgren's win by pinning Tom Anderson (Belview) just over a minute into the match to get six team points back for the Peacocks. Derek Skala (Owatonna) however responded by weathering a late comeback attempt by Brady Hakeman for a 9-6 decision to bump the Husky lead back up to 19-9.

It was more Huskies at 197 as eighth-ranked Nick Wilkes (Onamia) controlled his entire match with Matt Norton as he recorded an 18-3, technical fall victory over the Peacock junior.

The heavyweight match was a stalemate through regulation as Chris Schiewe (Chicago, Ill.) and No. 5 Dan Goodson recorded an escape apiece. After two scoreless overtimes, Goodson recorded an escape in the third extra session for the final Peacock victory.

The Huskies will wrap up its regular season on the road with duals at Mary and Minnesota State-Mankato. The Huskies and Mary will wrestle on Saturday at 12:00 in Bismarck.
