The Jacks and Cardinal both won five matches, but #7 Cody Pack’s tech fall at 157 proved to be the difference.
“We preach it every dual how important bonus point are and we saw it come to fruition tonight,” head coach Chris Bono said. “I’m proud of the effort our guys brought to the mat tonight.”
Following an opening loss at 125, Brance Simms started a string of four straight Jackrabbit wins.
“I put this dual on Bubba,” Bono added. “I told him if he wins, we win. He’s a tough kid and he performed.”
The junior battled his way to a 6-4 win over #21 Connor Schram in sudden victory. Schram took a 3-1 lead into the third, but Simms escaped early and recorded a takedown with a little over a minute remaining in the third. Simms rode the momentum and scored the clinching takedown just over 20 seconds into overtime.
Redshirt freshman Luke Zilverberg gave SDSU a 6-3 lead with a 7-2 decision over Mason Pengilly. Zilverberg struck first and added a reversal in the third for the 7-2 tally.
#29 Alex Kocer and Garrett Schaner went back-and-forth in the first before Schaner recorded a takedown. Kocer scored a reversal and got two nearfall in the final seconds for a 4-2 lead. Following a scoreless second, Kocer escaped and added riding time in the third.
#7 Pack dominated from the opening whistle and got his seventh tech fall of the year over Josh Lauderdale, 18-3. Pack recorded multiple takedowns in all three periods and added nearfall in the second and third.
Stanford answered with three wins to close the team score to 14-12.
#24 Nate Rotert got SDSU back on the board with a 4-3 decision over Garet Krohn, which was decided on riding time. Rotert got a takedown in the first and added an escape in the second before Krohn tied it up with an escape and takedown of his own in the third.
In the 285-lb finale, Stanford’s Josh Marchok won in sudden victory over J.J. Everard, 6-4.
SDSU closes out its dual season Sunday, February 22 against North Dakota State with the Western Wrestling Conference on the line. Wrestling is set for 2 p.m.
