Appalachian State stays perfect in SoCon with win

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Appalachian State University wrestling continued its Southern Conference schedule at The Citadel on Wednesday night. The Mountaineers (9-2, 4-0 SoCon) rolled to a 31-13 victory over the Bulldogs (4-6, 1-2 SoCon) to remain unbeaten in SoCon play this season.

The match started with the 133-pound weight class. Irvin Enriquez, competing in his second dual match of the season, earned a 16-0 technical fall over Caleb Smith to open up a 5-0 advantage for the Mountaineers. The major decision was the first of Enriquez's career. Michael Longo matched Enriquez's effort with a technical fall of his own. Longo defeated Andrew Clayton ,17-0, for his fourth-straight dual victory.

With a 10-0 lead, Matt Zovistoski took on Matthew Frisch at 149 pounds. Frisch gave the Bulldogs their first three points of the night with a 6-2 decision win over Zovistoski. Angel Najar faced the reigning Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week, Aaron Walker. Najar notched the first takedown of the match and battled hard with the two-time NCAA qualifier. Walker eventually pinned Najar in the third period, cutting the Appalachian lead to a single point.

Forrest Przybysz took to the mat with a 10-9 App State against Daniel Smith. Przybysz won his sixth-straight dual match with a 13-3 major decision. Nick Kee, the only Mountaineer with a 10-0 mark in dual matches coming into the match, remained perfect with 10-4 decision win over Timothy Knipl to give the Apps a 17-9 lead.
In the 184-pound match, Taylor Jackson put some distance between the Mountaineers and the Bulldogs when he pinned Sawyer Root 2:28 into the bout. Leading 23-9, Marcus Johnson got his first start at 197-pounds of the season against Marshall Haas. Johnson fell by 13-3 major decision.

Denzel Dejournette notched his fifth-straight major decision in dual matches against Joe Bexley with an 11-3 win. Vito Pasone closed out the match strong for the Apps in the 125-pound match versus Charles Kearney. Pasone recorded a 17-5 major decision over Kearney, sealing App State's 31-13 win.

The Mountaineers are back in action on Jan. 26 for a dual match against Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. App State was set to host the Appalachian Open this Saturday but were forced to cancel due to an impending winter storm.
