    Sacred Heart edges Rutgers

Fairfield, CT -- Despite earning wins in five of its 10 matches against Sacred Heart, the Rutgers University wrestling team fell to the Pioneers by a 22-18 count on Saturday evening.

The Scarlet Knights won two very promising matches and lost another. 165-pound freshman Matt Pletcher (East Hampton, NJ) defeated SHU's Anthony Hayes, 5-4, and 197-pounder Lamar Brown (Red Bank, NJ) dropped Kevin Fox by a 6-5 count.

Steve Adamcsik (Chester, NJ) struggled against a tough opponent in Chris Davis of the Pioneers; however, the 141-pound junior was able to extend his personal winning streak to 17 matches with a 5-4 decision. Adamcsik has not lost a match since Nov. 27, when he lost to Matt Ennis of Lehigh, and he currently owns the best record on the Rutgers squad at 21-3, including a 12-1 mark in dual meets.

Senior Rudy Medini (Colonia, NJ) earned the lone Rutgers pin of the night when he dropped Andrew Silber at the 3:36 mark. Medini improved his overall season record to 20-4, including an 11-1 record in dual meets.

Wrestling Payam Zarrinpour, the 11th ranked heavyweight in the nation, freshman Mike D'Amico (Kenilworth, NJ) dropped a close 5-3 decision.

RU head coach John Sacchi was encouraged by the victories by both Pletcher and Brown; however, D'Amico's match stuck out in particular.

"I feel very good about the way [D'Amico] wrestled, even though he lost," Sacchi said. "He was facing one of the best heavyweights in the nation tonight and he gave him all he could handle. We got some promising wins from our younger guys and two veterans in [Adamcsik] and [Medini]. Even though we won five matches, their edge in pins proved to be the difference."

The Scarlet Knights held an 18-16 lead heading into the final match; however, 149-pound sophomore Marcello Medini (Colonia, NJ) lost by pin-fall at 2:45 to Sean Eagan and RU wound up on the short end of a 22-18 score.

With the loss, the Scarlet Knights fell to 7-7 on the season, including a 3-4 mark in the EIWA Conference. The win improved the Pioneers to 6-8 overall. Sacred Heart is 5-3 in Colonial Athletic Association action.

The Scarlet Knights will close out their season with their final EIWA dual meet and a match-up against the Drexel Dragons. RU will take on the Eagles of American University on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 7:00 p.m. at the College Avenue Gymnasium to close out their conference slate.
