“We got after it today and I was excited about how we performed,” said Rutgers head coach Scott Goodale. “It was good to go against somebody else and it gave us a chance to see where we are at.”
Senior Kellen Bradley (Newton, N.J.), redshirt junior Dominick Russo (Netcong, N.J.) newcomer junior Bill Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.) and freshman Jesse Boyden (Kelinworth, N.J.) all claimed pin victories.
14th-ranked Russo won the quickest bout as he pinned Paul Schweighardt in 1:32.
19th-ranked Lamar Brown (Red Bank, N.J.) showed no rust after redshirting last season as he won by major decision over Brandon Lapp, 12-1.
Along with Boyden, freshmen Vincent Dellefave (Toms River, N.J.), Daniel Rinaldi (Lodi, N.J.) and Braden Turner (Edison, N.J.) all picked up victories.
Turner defeated Anthony Priore by a 4-2 decision. Priore was ranked fifth in the 157-weight class of the preseason Colonial Athletic Association rankings.
“I was concerned about how they (freshmen) would do with their first match and how they would react,” said Goodale. “Dellefave started us off with the first win. They all did a good job of competing and scoring bonus points today and that was exciting.”
Sophomores Trevor Melde (Hewitt, N.J.) and Gregory Zanetti (Edison, N.J.) also picked up victories for Rutgers.
The Scarlet Knights will be back in action next Saturday at the Brockport Gold Tournament in Brockport, N.Y.
