    Riordan's Roundup: Dec. 10 - Dec. 16

My weekly annotated compilation of notable wrestling results. Now with even more intelligent observations!

    Tournaments

    Sunday, Dec. 16:

    K. Undrakhbayar
    Reno Tournament of Champions
141: The Citadel's seventh-ranked K. Undrakhbayar, known as "Ugi," beat fourth-ranked Michael Mangrum of Oregon State in the finals, 4-3. On his way to the title, he also beat WVU's 18th-ranked Nathan Pennesi. Pennesi placed third.

149: Boise State's fourth-ranked Jason Chamberlain claims another tournament title. Eleventh-ranked Scott Sakaguchi injury defaults out of the tournament after the third round.

157: R.J. Pena, ranked 10th for Oregon State, adds another gold medal to his collection beating 11th-ranked Wyoming Cowboy Andy McCulley, 11-6.

174: Twentieth-ranked Bryce Hammond of Bakersfield falls to fourth place.

184: Twelfth-ranked Boise State Bronco Jake Swartz wins title.

197: Fourth-ranked Wyoming standout Alfonso Hernandez captures the championship by beating 11th-ranked Taylor Meeks of Oregon State, 9-6.

285: A real rankings mess at heavyweight. I'll just list the places.

1st: Michigan State's 11th-ranked Mike McClure pins in the finals
2nd: The Citadel's 16th-ranked Odie Delaney gets a nice pin over Tyrell Fortune en route to the finals
    4th: Boise State's ninth-ranked J.T. Felix
5th: Oho's 17th-ranked Jeremy Johnson, loses to Delaney in the semis
6th: Oregon State's sixth-ranked Chad Hanke falls to McClure in the semis, then defaults out.

    Dual Meets

    Sunday, Dec. 16:

    Grapple at the Garden
    Drexel 24, George Mason 19

    Oklahoma State 41, Chattanooga 9
At 165, third-ranked Tyler Caldwell sticks 20th-ranked Josh Condon in the third period.

    Missouri 22, Cornell 12
Fourth-ranked 125-pounder Alan Waters of Missouri downs 10th-ranked Nahshon Garrett, 8-5.

    Surging sixth-ranked 133-pound Nate McCormick majors Cornell's eighth-ranked Nick Arujau, 11-3.

Having previously tumbled from the rankings at 141, Mizzou's Nick Hucke earns a big win over Cornell's 10th-ranked Mike Nevinger, a returning All-American.

Cornell's Chris Villalonga is ranked 20th at 149, and he keeps improving steadily. Here he beats 17th-ranked Drake Houdashelt.

Kyle Dake does what he does best and shuts down a quality opponent. This time it is Mizzou's 13th-ranked Zach Toal, 4-0.

At 184, second-ranked defending national champ Steve Bosak is back. He dominates eighth-ranked Mike Larson of Mizzou, 6-0.

    Iowa 42, Hofstra 0
Things don't get any better for Steve Bonanno. Here he gets in the way of Matt McDonough on the Iowa senior's path to becoming the 125 GOAT. McDonough gets the major, 10-2.

The 141-pound weight class sees 11th-ranked Hawkeye Mark Ballweg best the tough 13th-ranked Luke Vaith of Hofstra, 3-2.

    Ohio State 30, Maryland 7
Ian Paddock in in the lineup at 149 for this dual. I'm not sure about you, but I'm pulling for this kid (young man really) big time.

Maryland was without Josh "The Asperator" Asper.

Fourteenth-ranked 125-pound Buckeye Nikko Triggas notches a nice win over 13th-ranked Shane Gentry of Maryland, 7-1.

At 197, 10th-ranked Andrew Campolattano continues to grow into his massive potential. He beats 16th-ranked Christian Boley of Maryland, 6-3.

    Nebraska 22, Rutgers 10
Nineteenth-ranked 141-pounder Ridge Kiley beats 20th-ranked Scarlett Knight Trevor Melde, 3-0.

Thirteenth-ranked 157-pound Rutgers senior Scott Winston falls by major to Brandon Wilbourn, 13-2.

At 174, eighth-ranked Cornhusker Robert Kokesh continues to sparkle as he beats 10th-ranked Greg Zanetti, 6-2.

Josh Ihnen continues to be excellent. His ranking is all the way up to No. 6 and deservedly so. He tops 14-ranked Dan Rinaldi of Rutgers, 4-0.

    Missouri 22, Bloomsburg 9
Two of the most underrated teams in the nations lock horns in this dual. 141-pound Husky Matt Rappo beats Nick Hucke of Mizzou, 7-5.

Mizzou's Kyle Bradley earns a welcomed big win, beating seventh-ranked 157-pounder Frank Hickman, 3-2.

Bloomsburg earned an upset of their own at 165 as Josh Veltre upended 13th-ranked Zach Toal, 7-4.

In a nice high scoring heavyweight showdown, the No. 2 heavyweight in the nation Dom Bradley handles 19th-ranked Husky Justin Grant, 10-6.

    Iowa 34, Bucknell 9
165 is a weight class that has big implications for Iowa's hunt for a national title. Nineteenth-ranked Hawkeye Nick Moore's 5-2 loss to 16th-ranked Corey Lear is therefore not a good sign to Iowa's black clad devotees.

    Rutgers 22, Chattanooga 12
Twentieth-ranked 165-pound Moc Josh Condon will probably fall from the fringes of the rankings as he falls to Rutgers's Nick Visicaro, 11-8.

    Oklahoma State 21 Cornell 16
Seventh-ranked Cowboy Jon Morrison is looking good up a weight. Here he beats the eighth-ranked 133-pound wrestler, Nick Arujau, 5-0.

The only difference I see between the 149-pound Jordan Oliver and the 133-pound version is that he is perhaps earning fewer pins at this weight. Other than that, he has been every bit as dominant. Oliver, who is ranked No. 1 at 149 pounds, majors Cornell's 20th-ranked Chris Villalonga, 11-3.

In the super feature match of the week, top-ranked 165-pounder Kyle Dake locks horns with OSU's third-ranked Tyler Caldwell. Dake's amazing mat wrestling wins the day as he wins 4-1 on the strength of a reversal and riding time.

It's time to start noticing dandy 13th-ranked OSU youngster Chris Chionuma. Here he narrowly loses to the No. 2 184-pounder in the country, Cornell's Steve Bosak, 4-3.

    Ohio State 38, Hofstra 3
Steve Bonanno's record has taken a beating this year as the returning All-American has wrestled on of the most brutal schedules I've ever seen. Here 19th-ranked Bonnano falls to 14th-ranked Buckeye Nikko Triggas, 1-0.

At 141, second-ranked Hunter Stieber is looking fantastic. He majors 13th-ranked Pride wrestler Luke Vaith, 17-7.

    Maryland 18, Nebraska 17
Tenth-ranked Terp Jimmy Sheptock registers a huge win as he beats sixth-ranked 184-pounder Josh Ihnen.

    Edinboro 28, Clarion 12

    Northwestern 26, Clarion 9
Not surprising that the No. 2 157-pounder in the nation, Jason Welch, beats Clarion's third-ranked James Fleming. What is surprising is the 10-1 score. Maybe Welch is stepping up his offense just a bit.

    Edinboro 22, Northwestern 15
The NU Wildcats journey to the other side of The Lakes to take on the Fighting Scots.

    At 133, fourth-ranked Scot A.J. Schopp majors 16th-ranked Levi Mele, 10-2.

Tenth-ranked Wildcat Pierce Harger is really coming on this year and making his mark on the 165-pound weight class. Here he beats 18th-ranked Johnny Greisheimer, 5-3. At 285, seventh-ranked Mike McMullan edges 20th-ranked Ernest James of Edinboro, 3-2

Iowa State 22, North Dakota State 18
I'd like to mention, if I haven't done so already, North Dakota State is tough.

Fifth-ranked 125-pound Bison Trent Sprenkle picks up an injury default win over ISU's Ryak Finch. Let's hope Finch is all right.

7-5 is the score of Seventeenth-ranked Boaz Beard's victory over 18th-ranked NDSU 184-pounder Mac Stoll.

    Indiana 19, Eastern Michigan 18

    Purdue 34, SIU-Edwardsville 9

    Saturday, Dec. 15:

Penn State 42, Lock Haven 3

    Friday, Dec. 14:

Ohio State 27, Kent State 10
Fourth place at NCAAs last year, 10th-ranked 149-pound Buckeye Cam Tessari seems to be struggling a bit in his sophomore campaign. This dual sees him lose 10-3 to Kent's Nick Carr.

Kenny Courts finally gets a collegiate victory he can hang his hat on. Here the Buckeye frosh upends 16th-ranked Casey Newburg with a double in overtime, 6-4.

It apparently is now a law in Ohio that Dustin Kilgore must wrestle Andrew Campolattano once a week. Once upon a time I worked as a landscaper and for some elaborate jobs we would build restraining walls out of castle block. Kilgore looks exactly like one of those walls, only he has arms and legs. Needless to say, Campolattano struggles to get offense going against him. This time Kilgore, the 197-pound kingpin, wins 10-1.

    Chattanooga 27, Princeton 10

    Thursday, Dec. 13:

    Northern Iowa 46, Ellsworth 9
