The 22nd ranked Broncs won eight of 10 bouts to defeat former CAA rival Binghamton Saturday afternoon. “They were nationally ranked last year when we beat them,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor, who now has 295 career wins. “They are not currently ranked but they are always a strong program.”
For Rider (5-1), nationally ranked senior Ramon Santiago (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville) improved to 7-3 with a tech fall at 165 to give Rider a 23-0 lead.
Freshman Paul Kirchner (Somerville, NJ/Somerville) improved to 5-5 with a major decision at 141, sophomore Curt Delia (Mullica Hill, NJ/Delsea) improved to 5-5 with a major decision at 149 and freshman Wayne Stinson (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional) improved to 2-7 with a major decision at 157.
“Kirchner looked very good,” Taylor said, “and Delia looked good today.”
Stinson was ranked 11th in the nation in high school where he won 140 matches but had struggled as a starter for Rider. “He didn’t just win a match today he really showed some nice takedowns,” Taylor said. “We were all happy to see that today.”
Binghamton (1-5) broke the shutout with wins at 184 and heavyweight.
Nationally ranked sophomore Robert Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional) improved to 8-2 with an overtime win to give Rider a 3-0 lead. “(David) White beats good wrestlers,” Taylor said of Deutsch’s opponent. “He’s a hard opponent to figure out. It was a good win for Rob. It’s a good sign of a winner when you figure out a way to get your hand raised at the end, and Rob did that today.”
Sophomore Conor Brennan (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) improved to 8-4 with an overtime win at 174. “Conor did a great job again today,” Taylor said.
The wrestler Brennan is filling in for came back today, sooner than expected.
With junior Clint Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) out with an injury, three-time NCAA qualifier Jim Resnick (Media, Pa./Penncrest), who red-shirted last year, came back from an injury to make his first appearance since 2012, but lost at 184. “We brought Jim back sooner than we had planned, but he stepped up for his team and almost tilted Wallace several times but didn’t get the call,” Taylor said. “Resnick has beaten Wallace in the past.”
The Broncs defeated nationally ranked Binghamton 19-15 last year. The Broncs have won nine of the 11 matches with Binghamton since the series began in 2002-03.
Rider travels to Western PA to take on Edinboro and Clarion in a pair of EWL dual meets December 21.
Edinboro took second ranked Iowa to the brink recently, losing 21-19. “That ought to tell you everything you need to know about Edinboro,” Taylor said of the EWL rival. “That’s one good team, and Clarion is also a very good team. The EWL is very good.”
