Rider defeats Lock Haven in EWL action

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. -- The Broncs won eight of the 10 bouts to defeat Lock Haven in an Eastern Wrestling League dual meet Saturday. “I'm pleased with the way our kids wrestled today,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. “We're still a bit banged up but the kids responded today.”

For Rider (5-6, 1-1 EWL) junior Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, Del./Caravel) won by tech fall at 197 to give Rider an 11-3 lead. “Ryan did a good job,” Taylor said. “He continues to get better and better each week.” Wolfe improves to 2-0 in the EWL, 16-8 overall and 8-4 in duals.

Senior Robert Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional), the 2015 EWL Champion at 133, defeated last year's EWL 141 runner-up 6-3 to give Rider a 20-3 lead. “Rob is back and we're happy about that,” Taylor said.

“I was out for four or five weeks with a rib injury,” said Deutsch, a three-time NCAA qualifier. “It stinks being on the sidelines watching but I had to be 100 percent before I came back or it could have been a problem all year. I've felt better every match since I've been back.”

“He beat a good kid today,” Taylor said.

“He was in the weight class above me so I've never wrestled him before,” Deutsch said of his opponent, Bobby Rehm. ““He was pretty tough. Lock Haven always has had great wrestlers. The score might not show it but they wrestled hard today. It always feels great to get a conference win, especially in your home gym.”

Rider senior Curt Delia (Mullica Hill, NJ/Delsea) won at 165, his 54th career win but just his third win of the year (3-2, 2-1 duals). “Curt's good,” Taylor said. “We told him that we need him to not just fill in but to win, and he got a nice win today.”

Rider sophomore Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) won a major decision at 149 for the final score. “You could see the real Chad Walsh today,” Taylor said of his EWL champion who was ill last week while competing at the Virginia Duals. “Chad did a great job trying to go last week but that wasn't Chad. We all saw Chad today.” Walsh improved to 2-0 in the EWL, 15-5 overall.

Rider sophomore Wayne Stinson (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional) won to give Rider a 6-0 lead. “Stinson beat a pretty good kid,” Taylor said.

Sophomore Mauro Correnti (Delran, N.J./Holy Cross), senior Zach Valcarce (Willas, NJ/Lower Cape May) and junior Paul Kirchner (Somerville, NJ/Somerville) also won for Rider.

For Lock Haven (6-6, 1-1 EWL) freshman Tristan Sponseller won at 184 to improve to 19-9. All-American Dan Neff won at 149 for his 100th career win.

Lock Haven placed third at the EWL Championships last year behind perennial champion Edinboro and second place Rider.

Rider has now won the last five meetings with the Bald Eagles but Lock Haven leads the all-time series 16-8.

Rider won 18-16 at Lock Haven last year. Each team won five bouts and four of the matches went into overtime. Rider defeated Lock Haven 23-12 in 2014 and 19-14 in 2013.

Rider travels to Edinboro for an EWL dual January 23 and to Cleveland State on the 24th. “Last two years we haven't done well against those two and this year it is even tougher having both of them on the same weekend,” Deutsch said. “We have to be ready this year.”

“We will try to get ready for that weekend,” Taylor said. “I believe it will be two good matches.”
