Rider claims victories over Cleveland State, Drexel

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. -- The Rider University wrestling team had a solid day on the mat on Friday, winning a pair of duals at Alumni Gymnasium. The Broncs (3-2, 1-0 EWL) started the day with a resounding, 33-5, victory over conference foe Cleveland State before topping regional rival Drexel, 21-13, in the nightcap.

The Broncs dominated the Vikings, winning all nine bouts that were contested. Nationally-ranked No. 17 Jesse Dellavecchia (Great River, NY/East Islip) and freshman George Walton (Franklin, NJ/Bound Brook) earned bonus points with consecutive pins at 165 and 174, respectively. Wrestling most of the match with negative one point due to a one-point deduction assessed during the opening match, Cleveland State took its only points via Rider's forfeit at 184.

The Broncs started out strong against the Dragons, winning four of the first five bouts contested. Gino Fluri (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren Regional) came back in a sudden victory and Dellavecchia defeated nationally-ranked No. 14 Ebed Jarrell.

    Quotes & Notes

"It was a good day. This win against Drexel, particularly feels nice because we lost a heartbreaker to them last year. Over the last few years every time we've wrestled Drexel the home team has won and we were hoping to be that team this year. Our guys wrestled well today. It was nice to get revenge so to speak and continue to grow and develop in that process."

"Michale still isn't 100 percent. You can see it in his actions. His knee is still sore. It's going to be a little time before he's 100 percent, but he did what he needed to do today. George has a lot of talent. He just needs to finish a couple of those positions and he would have come out on the other end of that decision. George is a good kid, he works hard and he has a bright future if he continues develop and pushing his limits."

"Tomorrow is another EWL battle. I expect them to come in and fight hard against us. I also expect our guys to turn around and do the same. We're looking for the effort from our guys to take care of business. We'll sleep well tonight, make weight in the morning and do it all over again tomorrow evening." – Rider Head Coach John Hangey

    - Dellavecchia now has a team-leading 15 wins and three pins on the year.
    - Dellavecchia, Jonathan Tropea, Anthony Cefolo, Travis Layton, Gino Fluri and Ethan Laird each won both of their matches today.
    - Walton made his dual debut, pinning Cleveland State's Colton Carroll at 1:04. It was his second pin of the year.
    - The Broncs return to EWL action tomorrow, when they host Edinboro at 7 p.m.
