After the Panthers dropped the 125-pound bout, Shelton Mack got Pitt on the board with a 12-4 major decision over Colton Dalbert at 133 pounds. Mack got off to a solid start recording a trio of first period takedowns, including one near the edge as time expired to take a 6-2 advantage into the second period. After Dalbert started down and earned an escape, Mack got back on the offensive and scored another takedown to take a five point advantage into the third. Starting down in the third, Mack quickly got back to the neutral position and went on the offensive again scoring a takedown and then riding Dalbert for enough time to secure a bonus point for riding time. A late escape by Dalbert didn’t matter as Mack was able to keep the LHU wrester at bay to secure the 12-4 major and give Pitt its first lead of the evening.
The lead was short lived as Lock Haven took the bout at 141 pounds to gain a 6-4 advantage before the Panthers won the final two bouts before intermission to take an 11-6 lead into the break.
At 149 pounds, Ronnie Garbinksy continued his solid season with a 9-5 decision over Mac Maldarelli. Garbinksy came out of the gates aggressive scoring a takedown less than 10 seconds into his bout. After securing some riding time, Maldarelli was able to escape but Garbinksy kept the pressure on and secured another takedown to take a 4-1 lead into the second period. Following a second that saw Maldarelli score the only points on an escape, Garbinsky started down in the third and quickly scored two points on a reversal. An additional takedown and a point for riding time were enough to counter an escape and late reversal by Maldarelli as Garbinksy captured the 9-5 decision.
Donnie Tasser became the second Panther to pick up bonus points for his squad when he took a dominant 12-0 decision over Aaron Fry at 157-pounds. Tasser jumped on Fry early and often scoring a takedown and three back points in the first, an escape, takedown and three back points in the second and riding out Fry in the third for the win. In all, Tasser accumulated an impressive 5:25 of riding time in the victory and sent Pitt into the break with momentum and an 11-6 lead.
Coming out of the intermission, the Pitt upper-weights were again lights out as all five wrestlers won and four of the five collected bonus points for the team.
Tyler Wilps got the rally going with an impressive 20-4 (7:00) tech fall over Aaron McKinney at 165 pounds. Wilps’ win was followed by a Nick Bonaccorsi 12-3 major decision against Tyler Wood at 174 pounds.
After Max Thomussiet earned a hard-fought 4-1 decision over Fred Garcia, Matt Wilps scored a 15-5 major and Zac Thomusseit tallied his team-leading ninth pin on the season at the 2:32 mark against Cody Mason to close out the 33-6 victory for the Panthers.
Pitt will return to the mats on Saturday, Feb. 2, when its hosts long-time rival West Virginia in a 7 p.m. dual at Fitzgerald Field House.
